Republicans Talking About Hillary (It's 2023)
House Republicans have organized a committee to investigate the weaponization of government, but in reality, the committee does nothing more than find spurious ways to smear Democrats. The committee is bringing up Hillary Clinton and Hunter Biden, despite the fact that Hillary hasn’t been in government in ten years and Hunter is not a political figure. Two Republican senators, Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson, brought up Hillary Clinton in the first hearing and Johnson also mentioned Hunter Biden. Democrat Stacey Plaskett accurately criticized the hearings as a place to settle scores, showcase conspiracy theories, and advance an extreme agenda that could undermine the American people's faith in democracy. She also pointed out that some of the witnesses were bogusly claiming that the Department of Justice and the FBI were part of a deep-state cabal. As Plaskett pointed out, the hearings were not meant to investigate, but rather to prop up a narrative that Republicans already decided to be true, based on conspiracy theories and wild claims.
Resolution Introduced to Expel George Santos from Congress
Democrats in the House of Representatives have filed a resolution to expel George Santos from Congress due to his long list of lies that got him elected in the first place. The resolution is led by Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia. Nearly 8 in 10 of Santos’ New York constituents want him to step down, but the disgraced congressman remains defiant and has vowed to fight on. While Republicans currently control the House of Representatives, there are some Republicans who are also disgusted with Santos, and it is not out of the question that Democrats could find enough Republicans to get rid of him. However, there doesn’t appear to be much of an appetite by Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House leadership to oust him, especially since Republicans are operating with such a razor-thin majority to begin with. The best case scenario is this resolution is successful and Santos leaves Congress, and the worst case scenario is that Republicans look foolish by getting in the way of that.

Republican Twitter Hearings Utterly Humiliating, Spectacular Backfire
Republicans have begun the dog and pony show hearings now that they have taken back control of the House of Representatives. The first major one was intended to make Twitter look as though they are biased against conservatives, but it backfired and failed miserably because Democratic committee members brought plenty of counterexamples. Lauren Boebert did her best to act defiant when asking questions, saying “did you shadow ban my account, yes or no?” and presenting print-outs of tweets to make it look like she was doing good work. Another congressman, Pat Fallon, attacked Twitter for censoring the revenge porn of Hunter Biden in the final weeks before the 2020 election. Fallon made the tired argument that if not for this censorship, Trump would have won. Ultimately, these hearings exposed House Republicans for being the unserious people they are.
From yesterday’s show:
Marjorie Taylor Greene Thinks It Was Illegal for Twitter to Ban Her
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene recently claimed during a hearing that Twitter broke the law when they suspended her account for violating their terms of service. Greene’s argument is rooted in Twitter violating her free speech rights. But the congresswoman, like so many of her followers, doesn’t understand that the First Amendment applies to the government, not to private companies like Twitter. Social media platforms still have the right to set their own standards and enforce them as they see fit. There is also no guarantee of freedom of speech in all circumstances and there are limitations, such as incitement to violence. Social media companies are private businesses and can enforce their policies however they want. This does not necessarily mean it should be this way, but this is the paradigm we currently operate under and that the law protects. Marjorie Taylor Greene will have to deal with this reality and come to terms with the fact that this issue has nothing to do with the First Amendment.
