Gun violence is dramatically worse in red states
A recent study has shown that gun violence is significantly worse in red states compared to blue states, which contradicts the common narrative pushed by Republicans about violence and gun violence being a problem in “Democrat cities.” An article in Politico magazine reveals that blue areas historically and presently have significantly lower rates of gun violence, whether it is divided regionally or state to state. The Deep South has some of the highest rates of gun death among major regions, despite being one of the most conservative parts of the country, while right-wing Great Appalachia has the highest rate of gun suicides among major regions. Violence and crime are complicated issues that can relate to culture, economics, gun laws, access to mental health services, and many other things. While solving the problem requires considering factors such as mental health, culture, poverty, and education, guns cannot be excluded from the discussion.
Nikki Haley: Biden won't live to the end of his 2nd term
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley has expressed doubt that Joe Biden will live to the end of a second term if he’s reelected in 2024. Haley has so far been basing her campaign on how she’s not elderly like Biden or Donald Trump. Actuarial tables suggest that an 82-year-old man, like Biden, is expected to live almost seven years more, and the expected outcome is that he would live to 86 and finish his term. That’s because the longer one lives, relatively, the higher their life expectancy. Haley's concern about Biden's age and competency is also questionable. While she suggests mental competency tests for people over 75, it is not clear how this relates to her concern about Biden's life expectancy. Haley's statement is not based on solid evidence and it’s clear her campaign lacks any real message other than being a younger alternative.
From yesterday’s show:
OH NO: Disney sues Ron DeSantis for his crusade to destroy them
Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is facing a new lawsuit from the Walt Disney Company, alleging that he has waged a “relentless campaign to weaponize government power over the company.” The feud between DeSantis, who is expected to become a top Republican contender in the 2024 presidential race, and the entertainment megacorporation Disney has escalated dramatically. The lawsuit was filed on the same day that a US-backed board moved to undo a development deal that it says Disney struck to thwart its power. DeSantis has been accused of using government power against Walt Disney World as a retaliatory action for the company's stance against the “Don't Say Gay” bill. This has led some to question whether the chaos in Florida will become a distraction and impediment to DeSantis's potential presidential campaign. It is unclear how the lawsuit will play out, but it has the potential to backfire on DeSantis since he seems to have legally overstepped his boundaries.
From yesterday’s show:
LOL: Marjorie Taylor Greene thinks Tucker's firing was illegal
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene went on Newsmax and claimed that Tucker Carlson's firing from Fox News was illegal as it violated the First Amendment. Greene said, “I think it was devastating to our First Amendment . . . I see it as a very serious problem. Our First Amendment is free speech, but it's also freedom of press. And when a gigantic media company like Fox News fires their number one, Tucker Carlson, not for him doing anything wrong, not because his ratings were bad, but they literally fired him because they came to the mob, what we're seeing is we're seeing the end of the First Amendment.” It may be news to Congresswoman Greeene but private companies are not bound by the First Amendment in the same way as government agencies. Private companies can generally set their own rules and policies. The idea that a private company firing an employee would violate the First Amendment is ridiculous. While firings can be illegal, wrongful termination can and often is argued by employees, and there are various protections in place. The firing was a financial decision as Tucker Carlson had caused problems for Fox News and the network was well within its rights to terminate him.
