Marjorie Taylor Greene ERUPTS, says NYC "disgusting" after DISASTROUS "protest"
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene went on Tucker Carlson's Fox News program yesterday to criticize New York City, claiming that it's disgusting, dirty, and that people are dying from drugs on the streets. This was in response to her failed attempt to hold a protest in support of Donald Trump, which was shut down quickly by hecklers. Of course, left out of Greene’s commentary is that there are addiction problems in many parts of the country, including the south where Marjorie Taylor Greene is from and represents. Furthermore, the meme that New York City is a terrible place is played out, as the city has a lower crime rate than many other cities in the US, including those run by Republicans. It's now popular for folks on the right to criticize New York City, even if the criticisms are not breaking any new ground. But if a progressive member of Congress had made the same criticisms about red areas of the country, Republicans would clutch their pearls and that representative would never hear the end of it.
WHOA: Trump calls for police to be de-funded
Failed former President Donald Trump is now calling for the police to be defunded, despite complaining for years now about how some portion of the left wanted to do this. This is a reaction to Trump getting arrested earlier this week by New York authorities in connection with his alleged hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels back in 2016. Trump posted on Truth Social, “REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS SHOULD DEFUND THE DOJ AND FBI UNTIL THEY COME TO THEIR SENSES. THE DEMOCRATS HAVE TOTALLY WEAPONIZED LAW ENFORCEMENT IN OUR COUNTRY AND ARE VICIOUSLY USING THIS ABUSE OF POWER TO INTERFERE WITH OUR ALREADY UNDER SIEGE ELECTIONS!” Trump is not the only Republican calling for defunding the police, as Congressman Jim Jordan did the same earlier this week over the same issue. Republicans are clearly being hypocrites on this matter but, of course, their voters won’t see or care about the obvious contradiction.
From yesterday’s show:
Progressive Brandon Johnson elected Mayor of Chicago
Brandon Johnson, a progressive union organizer, has defeated Paul Vallas in the race to become the next mayor of Chicago. The current mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, came in third place in the first round of voting which happened on February 28th. This eliminated her from the competition, and since no one received a majority of the vote, the top two vote-getters, Vallas and Johnson, faced off in this week’s runoff election. Despite Chicago's strict gun laws, gun violence is still prevalent in the city and a top concern among voters. Johnson's plan is not to defund the police but to reform them. He has outlined a sensible plan for policing in Chicago, which may require additional funding to achieve. Johnson's victory is a major achievement for progressives and hopefully, it will have ripple effects across the entire country.
From yesterday’s show:
Liberal judge wins to get control of WI Supreme Court for 1st time in 15 years
A liberal judge has won the race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which has given liberals control over the court for the first time in 50 years. Janet Protasiewicz won the highly consequential contest, defeating conservative Daniel Kelly by an 11-point margin. The change in the court's composition could result in the reversal of the state's abortion ban and the end of the use of gerrymandered legislative maps. It also has significant implications for the 2024 presidential election, as Wisconsin is a battleground state that was closely decided in 2016 and 2020, and the State Supreme Court may play a role in ensuring that the candidate who receives the most votes actually gets the state’s ten electoral votes. The defeated conservative, Daniel Kelly, gave a bitter concession speech, in which he criticized his opponent and called her campaign “deeply deceitful, dishonorable, and despicable.” This victory, along with the win in Chicago, should be considered a huge step forward for the progressive movement in the United States.
