Herschel Walker Holds Most Disastrous Press Conference in History
Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker held a press conference yesterday to address the scandal that he paid for a woman to get an abortion back in 2009. This is really only a controversy because Walker has claimed that he is vehemently opposed to abortion and doesn’t believe there should be exceptions even for rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk. Walker first claimed he didn’t know if he knew the woman making the charge, which fell apart once it became clear he fathered a child with her. During the press conference, a reporter asked if he had reached out to all of the women he shares children with so he could identify who was making the allegation. In a totally bizarre and unintelligible response, Walker replied, “because of the article I had more kids.” Herschel also denied saying something he said earlier yesterday in an interview, which is that “if that had happened, I would have said it because there’s nothing to be ashamed of.” Walker often struggles to make sense when speaking, so the idea of having him hold a press conference to address the scandal was predictably a bad one.
Young Women Trending Liberal; Young Men Are Not
There’s a new report out that finds young women are trending more liberal, whereas young men are not. According to a Gallup poll, 44% of young women said they are liberal whereas only 25% of young men did. This is the largest gender gap in the 24-year history that this question has been asked by the polling organization. The rate of liberal men has not been changing over the years, but the rate of women who identify as left of center sharply has. This is likely due to the #MeToo movement and the overturning of Roe vs. Wade among many other issues. It’s possible that the number of young men who are actually liberal is greater than 1 in 4, and 25% is just the amount of people willing to say so in this cohort. Certain societal pressures could play a role in this, like the notion that being progressive is somehow unmanly. Just a few days ago, for example, Marjorie Taylor Greene said that electric cars are “emasculating.” This poll suggests that there needs to be a reshaping of the language on these issues and that more has to be done to convince folks to be proud progressives.
From yesterday’s show:
Ron DeSantis Begrudgingly Praises Biden at Hurricane Event
President Biden went down to Florida this week to assess the effects of Hurricane Ian and Governor Ron DeSantis begrudgingly praised him because there was really nothing to criticize him over. DeSantis said, “we were very fortunate to have good coordination with the White House and with FEMA from the very beginning of this. . . . we got a major disaster declaration approved by the president and we appreciated that.” Biden spoke about the bipartisan effort as well, saying, “what the governor’s done is pretty remarkable” and “the biggest thing that the governor’s done and so many others have done is recognizing that there is a thing called global warming. The world is changing.” Biden has been in politics for a long time so he can recall periods of time when Democrats and Republicans would be able to work together on the most important issues, including natural disaster response. This allowed him to shine in this moment, while DeSantis was left looking like it was difficult for him to give Joe Biden any positive attention.
From yesterday’s show:
Biden Hot Mic: "No One F*cks with a Biden"
There was a viral moment from Joe Biden’s visit to Florida yesterday which is when he told the Mayor of Fort Myers Beach, “no one f*cks with a Biden.” Biden was assessing the damage caused by Hurricane Ian and meeting with local leaders. He had Mayor Ray Murphy pulled aside and thought back to a saying from his younger years, “no one f*cks with a Biden and you can’t argue with your brothers outside the house.” It’s good to see this side of the president from time to time since this is genuinely how he is. In another viral hot-mic moment over a decade ago, Biden whispered in then-President Obama’s ear “this is a big f*ing deal” when the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. There are people on the right, however, who are complaining about Biden’s f-bomb and arguing such language is unbecoming of a president. Of course, Donald Trump spoke that way all the time and still does at his rallies. Trump’s natural disaster response was also much worse than Biden’s, as Biden approved emergency relief efforts early whereas Trump would drag his feet and assess whether assisting would help or hurt him politically.
