Live w/ David Pakman & Jessica Knurick, PhD, RDN

A recording from David Pakman's live video

In this Substack Live, David Pakman speaks with nutrition scientist and science communicator Dr. Jessica Nurik about why nutrition and medical misinformation has become so widespread online and how social media rewards certainty, fear, and conspiracy over nuance. They explore why many misleading health claims contain a small kernel of truth before veering into unsupported conclusions, and discuss how movements like MAHA have tapped into legitimate public frustration with the healthcare system and food environment while, in their view, often misidentifying the underlying causes.

The conversation also tackles several of today’s biggest nutrition debates, including food dyes, seed oils, artificial sweeteners, added sugar, ultra-processed foods, and eggs. Rather than focusing on viral claims or single ingredients, Nurik argues that the strongest scientific evidence continues to support a much simpler approach: prioritize overall dietary patterns, eat more fruits, vegetables, and fiber, reduce excess added sugar, and be skeptical of sensational health messaging that promises easy answers to complex problems.
