What I find discouraging is hearing people say that it will take three generations or more to put the USA's house back in order so its citizens can realize their potential. Can this country be ruined so quickly and easily, yet take 50-60 years to recover? If so, I won't be alive to see it happen. It's not just about changing policies and politicians. For change to be positive, it must go wide and deep enough to change the citizenry, and prevent our current disaster from happening again. All this, and it requires a voting population that is wise enough to tell sh*t from shinola, and determined enough to stay engaged in promoting, or requiring, good government. It's a tall order, to be sure; but that just means that the sooner we take action, the better.
It would be easy enough for people my age (north of 80) to say it's too late for me to make a difference. But that would fly in the face of those miraculous framers (dreamers) of our Constitution. Therefor, we must continue to vote and remind any who might listen that we can and must do better. Thanks David for your thoughtful writing.
Well written and I have the same thoughts and vision myself. We can disagree on the tactics but the strategy of moving forward not backwards and fixing things that will make future generations thrive need to be contemplated.
If Trump AND the Republican Party continue after November I am afraid there is no moving forward. We MUST have Dems take both House and Senate so they can get rid of Trump, his Cabinet and his Admin AND TAKE DOWN THE CONSERVATIVE SCOTUS.
And make it impossible for a wanna be king thief to ever even get on a ballot for dog catcher let alone president. They ALL have to pay for the restitution of all they’ve broken as well

At 83 yrs old I doubt I'll see it like that again in my time, but sincerely wish it for you all soon.

I feel the same way as Pat & Mary. I grew up in a small (at that time) town called Woodland Hills, California. Every year on June 14th, Flag Day, marked the beginning of Freedom Season and it ended on July 4th with a grand parade and later a huge fireworks show at the nearby park!
There were competitions which household had the best display of showing their patriotism. Her first year participating, my mother won 4th prize. Next time she won 3rd prize; after that she won 2nd prize. Her final year, my mother won FIRST PRIZE 🏆. It was a very beautiful & dramatic display!
Both my parents were patriotic and they taught us kids to be proud to be Americans. They also taught us if you're in a different country to respect their laws & culture; to not be an "Ugly American" when abroad.
I NEVER voted for Trump because I could easily see through his Con and Lies. Nowadays I don't feel so proud. I'm appalled and extremely saddened; overwhelmed by each unholy hell that happens everyday. The Republican Party is definitely not the Republican Party of my parents; Mom & Dad are turning in their graves. I'm 72, I've been a Democrat for 40-some years. I've seen that nothing really changes, but the last 10 years have been really bad.
I've done A LOT of introspection and have studied the governments of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark because they are renowned for their exceptional quality of life, their progressive welfare & healthcare systems, and being the cleanest (green) places to live. I've decided THIS is what I want for the future of OUR country! We CAN use their model and establish something like it for the United States.

And I wouldn't wait until November, everyone should start right now the massive job of waking people up, and putting them on to sources of news not controlled by corporations and/or rich white men. There's plenty of incredible groups out there organizing, you just need to look to find one in your own backyard. And, please remember to vote!
