I have completely written off Trump supporters in my circle. If they change their minds, great! But I won’t know because I have nothing to do with these people anymore.

Hound's avatar

A lot of people are doing that. The average MAGAT has a normal intelligence and they know right from wrong and they know that Trump is morally deprived, a pedophile, a rapist, a liar, a thief, a felon, a womanizer, a traitor and possibly the antichrist yet they still Support him and spread his lies for him.

You’re not being judgmental or cruel, you simply see the undeniable truth of what these people are.

Voting is always a choice. In each case, these cult members decided that however depraved Trump is, the alternative is always unthinkable. How one gets into that frame of mind is a mystery for future researchers to disentangle. For us today, we need to guard against the worship of personality, the ideology that says a choice based upon the assumption that "crazy ol' Uncle Donald" is the best we can do. It is destructive and self-destructive to go that route. We must strengthen our guardian institutions and insist that they stick to their missions, uphold the laws, protect the victims, oust the perpetrators, and hold the operatives to higher standards.

It looks like we’re past the point of no return when it comes to reforming this government and getting rid of the criminals. These criminals have been entrenched for 30 years. Capitol Hill has been controlled By billionaires in corporate for a very long time. Our civil rights have been eroded for a very long time. Our privacy has been violated for a very long time. Wealth has been moved from the bottom to the top for a very long time.

I think it’s kind of naïve for people to believe that this corrupt government that has been corrupt for a very long time is capable or even willing over reforming itself and draining the proverbial swamp.

Trump capitalized on one thing and that was the fact that only a tiny percentage of Americans trust the government.

Everybody is saying that maha is collapsing. I will believe it when I see it

A Democrat will get in and as usual the economy will improve and the MAGA mob will not feel the pain of high prices and they will become the assholes that nature intended them to be.

MAGATS cannot be total lesson and humanity because they have no humanity.

paulahik's avatar

It's because they continue to believe their republican leaders since their churches tell them the same things and tell them to believe what they're told, not what they see, hear, or feel.

Hound's avatar

They’re probably indoctrinated very young and told not to think for themselves. The southern churches are pretty much cults. The other thing that people don’t wanna talk about especially the media is amount of sexual abuse that goes on in the Baptist Church and other fundamentalist Christian cults.

I understand that we don't want to push people back into the cult, but I also want something in return -- accept the results of your actions. You may be suffering now, but you've caused me to suffer with you. I did nothing to you, and yet you are damaging me. Maybe we should get them to apologize to us personally and individually. (won't happen) What do you guys think?

Daniel H Laemmerhirt's avatar

Possibly, but it depends on the person, the level of cult mentality, and the damage they caused BY voting for a pedophile rapist convicted felon contoddler.

Sharon Otstot's avatar

Do you think that no damage has been done? If no, why not? If yes, please describe the damage. thx

Hound's avatar

If the MAGA mob is having a change of heart is not because they are moral and are disgusted that Trump is a criminal, it is because they are filling the pain of the failing Trump economy. Everything is costing them more because of Trump and they also are starting to figure out the Trump is gonna be coming after their guns.

Daniel H Laemmerhirt's avatar

Correct! . . . then they'll immediately vote for the NEXT American-hating billionaire that doesn't pay taxes. 🙄

Hound's avatar

I keep bringing up the evil hypocrisy of the MAGAT. These MAGATS would’ve cheered and danced in the streets had Trump’s January 6 mob had been able to get their hands on Mike Pence who is an actual conservative and not a pig of a man and hanged him on the gallows that they brought for him.

PURGE THE SCOURGE! Part of the scourge is the MAGA gene pool. Spay & Neuter subhumans. Let’s not be shocked at the thought. Humanity deserves to be protected from these predators!

Excellent and much needed post, thank you.

As much as I totally get (and experience) the complete and utter rage so many of us are feeling, I find all the "never forgive" and "you got what you deserve" talk extremely disturbing. And definitely not helpful to any of us.

Hopefully shaming and ostracizing are not tools we use on partners, friends or our children.

Accountability? Absolutely. Offering nonjudgemental space for people? I hope so. And let them prove their words with actions. How long would you stick around if you were treated with anger and suspicion?

I'm not saying that it will be easy.

We've all made mistakes, to a greater or lesser degree. No one, including ourselves, needs to beat on themselves forever for it.

Having said that, accountability for those in the cabinet and congress who have allowed and contributed to the destruction of this country and betrayed their oath as well as the American people they vowed to serve? That would be a different conversation.

I don't know. Got a POS brother-in-law angling to forgive and forget. There is a lot of racism laid bare now and I think selfish, ignorant and easily manipulated voters need serious social ostracizing until they truly wake up. Some mandatory civics and history education too.

I want to figure out someday WHY people have fallen for and stayed loyal to this con man. He thinks he’s the smartest most loved, effective, and most popular man in the history of the presidency. When did he get to be so versed on fossil fuels? He thinks he’s knows best about EVERYTHING!!!

Narcissist is his middle name- now he knows all about coal- they gave him a trophy, he’ll now do everything for the coal industry because he so craves the praise!! Such a skin deep ego- doesn’t take much to make him rage and seek revenge- so childish with his petty grievances and tantrums- Send him to time out- on Mars-with Elon and Stephen,Karoline, Pete, Kash and Blondi . Oh man how did I forget Vance , LOOMER, Noem, Gabbard , Bessent, Bovino, Homan ETC! I know I’ve left some out-

Thx for addressing the difficult issue. I have a MAGA mom that still believes all the BS white supremacist excuses MAGA gives for their cruel actions. I would love for my mom to see the light & apologize!! But that alone wouldn’t restore our relationship as the hurt is just too deep. She would have fight to fix the atrocities she voted for for our relationship to even begin to heal, same with other MAGAs.

David, Your Canadian roots are shinning in this latest post. Taking the high road is in our DNA. Watching Canadians stick handle through Trump lies and bluster is an ongoing master class and well worth applying in this MAGA context. Let's hope that it's a better late than never story.

Thank you, David, for such sage advise. No one likes to be ridiculed. But if we offer a hand, a camaraderie then we can work together to find solution to this horrific situation that we find ourselves in. Try to be kind.

Toward the end of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln made his second inaugural speech, with the long-remembered "malice toward none" message through which he'd hoped to heal the nation's wounds. Within days he was felled by an assassin's bullet. Moreover, it was not merely the action of one individual; he was part of a conspiracy that failed in its attempts to kill Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and others. We have since seen other branches of such counter-movements, such as the Ku Klux Klan (which still exists today, enjoying the freedoms of speech and assembly guaranteed by their conquerors) and the alt-Right It's been multiplied by Q-Anon, The Great Replacement Theory, the Proud Boys, the Christian Nationalists, Neo-Nazis and others. Like a large puddle of water that becomes several smaller ones when you stomp on it, the decapitation of the MAGA movement will either drive it underground or send its disciples into splinter groups, but it will not solve the problem. We need to have a mass of informed voters that is sufficiently large and wise enough to ensure that no group hostile toward democracy ever again attains the mix of money and attention and critical mass sufficient to successfully mount a "slow coup" against this country. Unfortunately, we have learned that we cannot rely on our institutions, such as the courts, the legislature, the military or the media, to protect us from this. Freedom-loving people cannot simply say, "All is forgiven" and expect the problem to go away; because history has shown us that it will not. We must carefully consider, and relentlessly pursue, the means to stop anti-democratic ideas and forces, domestic and foreign, dead in their tracks. Alternative, independent news sources must be part of that effort.

"SPECTACULAR! WELCOME ABOARD!" That said, "PLEASE don't vote for a useless, criminal Trumplican EVER again. You WILL be sorry because they WILL NOT change."

That would be my response: I'm proud, but I'm also ashamed of you and hopeful you won't be a complete "fucking moron" in the future.

No. They need to face ridicule and be sent back to the basements they came from. And then from that day forward anyone who behave out of line needs to be set in front of everyone and mocked and ridiculed until they are so embarrassed they never do it again. I'm an advocate of the Chicago way. Our way works.

There is some woman who has been reporting that Trump was impeached and that marshalls escorted him out of the oval office. I don't know her name but I receive updates from her and others like Rachael Maddow. She has been wrong and is giving out wrong info. She stated that the event happened earlier this week. I just assumed she was from CNN. Now I don't know who to believe. My hopes were so high, and now the bubble has burst. Apparently, when the impeachment vote was taken, there was no longer a Democratic majority.

The first time is forgivable. The second and third times is harder to forgive. Still, it's very difficult to admit you've been wrong once, much less 3 times. Admitting it not only to themselves, but to everyone else actually takes courage and is something we shouldn't downplay. Think about it. Could you do it? And, I know I told you so is hard not to say--I bite it back daily with my sister--but it has no value and you'd just be saying it to press salt into a wound. Keep yourself from doing it. Tell them they understand now and that's important and invite them to talk to you about why they did it and what they learned from it without judgment.
