IT BEGINS: Pro-DeSantis PAC's UGLY ad attacking Donald Trump
An ad released by a pro-Ron DeSantis PAC attacking former President Trump is highlighting the increasingly bitter fight within the Republican Party in the early stages of the 2024 presidential primary. The ad accuses Trump of “repeating lies about Social Security” and mischaracterizing DeSantis’s position on the topic. The real significance of the ad is that it signals the start of what is likely to be an ugly GOP primary race that could damage the party and its eventual nominee. While some argue that a tough primary is a test of a candidate's resilience and ability to appeal to different segments of the Republican electorate, others believe that it will lead to irreparable fractures among the supporters of the different candidates. This is already the direction the primary is destined to go, despite the fact that DeSantis has not yet even announced his campaign.
Trump's brain obviously broken at criminally dangerous NRA speech
Former President Donald Trump spoke at the NRA convention and made outrageous comments that ignored the backdrop of mass shootings and gun violence in the country. He suggested that trans people and cannabis could be responsible for mass shootings and called for an independent panel to investigate whether transgender hormone treatments and ideology increase the risk of depression and violence. Trump also suggested that psychiatric drugs and genetically engineered cannabis could be causing psychotic breaks, despite not providing any evidence for his claims. The speech also included what was essentially a PowerPoint presentation that displayed tweets showing him ahead of other Republican presidential candidates. Overall, Trump's speech was more of the same right-wing talking points on gun violence with an extra layer of Trumpian insanity built on top of it.
From over the weekend:
Dianne Feinstein’s absence is hurting Biden and the Democrats
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein is facing pressure to resign due to her absence from the Senate committee since early March with shingles, which has resulted in her missing 60 votes. Her absence is preventing Biden's judicial nominees from being confirmed as they require her vote to move out of the committee. Feinstein has already announced that this will be her last term in office and that she will not seek reelection in 2024. However, given her extended absence and concerns about her cognitive state, it might be best for the Democratic Party if she steps down. Three Democratic congresspeople are running in the Senate primary next year, and since they cannot simultaneously run for their House seats, two of them will no longer be elected officials after the race. This could end up meaning that Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, two champions of the progressive movement, could be out of office in the next Congress. If Feinstein was to step down, California Governor Gavin Newsom would appoint a replacement. That person could be the presumptive winner for the ‘24 race and ensure that Porter and/or Lee remains as valuable voices in the House of Representatives.
From over the weekend:
Kari Lake likely running for Senate in 2024
It’s becoming increasingly clear that failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake is going to run for a US Senate seat. Although some people have speculated that she may be running to be Trump's vice-presidential running mate, she seems to have her eyes set on the Senate. Lake believes that she would win the Senate race in Arizona, beating both the Independent Kyrsten Sinema and the Democrat Ruben Gallego. Ever since losing her bid for governor last year to Katie Hobbs, Lake has spent months claiming there was widespread voter fraud and that was the reason for her defeat. She’s going to have to convince her supporters that this election will be worth voting in, despite many of them now believing there’s no point since the Democrats will simply rig it against her. One thing working in her favor is the possibility that Sinema and Gallego will split the independent and Democratic vote, giving Lake a clear lane to win a plurality by just turning out her right-wing base.
