Nikki Haley crumbles, can't cite single policy difference from Trump
Nikki Haley, former UN Ambassador and former Governor of South Carolina, is running for President in 2024. She seems to be making an argument that she is like Donald Trump, but younger and female. However, she has been unable or unwilling to draw any policy distinctions between herself and her chief competitor in the race, Donald Trump. In an interview with Fox News propagandist Sean Hannity, he asked Haley three times to tell him how she differs from Trump on policy, but she was unable to do so. Instead, she said that we need new generational leadership, that there are too many old politicians in DC, and that there need to be competency tests for elected officials over the age of 75. Hannity tried asking Haley to distinguish herself from Trump a second time, but she was unable to do so. Apparently, Haley intends to run a campaign on identity politics, which is a strategy that the right has been complaining about for years now.
LOL: Nikki Haley demands cognitive test for candidates over 75. Trump is 76
During her presidential campaign announcement, Nikki Haley called for cognitive tests to be given to any candidate for public office over the age of 75. This remark was interpreted as a dig at Joe Biden, who is 80 years old. However, the comment is also seen as an attempt to differentiate herself from Donald Trump, who is 76 and has faced questions about his cognitive abilities. Haley has not expressed any interest in attacking Trump directly and says she is kicking forward not sideways, meaning her focus is on defeating Biden and not Trump. However, this cognitive test remark goes to show she’s willing to make subtle digs at the former president. It’s not clear that this strategy will be successful for her, given Trump will attack Haley directly and she may look weak by not responding in kind. Haley entered the race polling at 3% and it remains to be seen whether her support will grow now that she has officially launched her campaign.
From yesterday’s show:
Trump wants to bring back firing squads, televise the executions
Former President Donald Trump reportedly plans to bring back firing squads and televise executions if he wins the presidency in 2024. Trump has previously expressed interest in executing drug dealers who he falsely claims are responsible for 500 deaths each. He has also talked about bringing back death by hanging and guillotine, and possibly even group executions. Trump has even mused about creating a government-backed video ad campaign to accompany a federal revival of these execution methods as a way to put the fear of God into violent criminals. The practical question is whether this will get out the vote and whether there is an appetite for these brutal methods of carrying out executions from Republican voters who support Trump. Even if this idea does work among the right-wing base, it’s inconceivable that independents would go for this if Trump is able to make it to the general election.
From yesterday’s show:
Dianne Feinstein will retire, clears path for Schiff vs Porter primary
California Senator Dianne Feinstein has announced that she will not seek re-election in 2024. This has opened up the field for a hotly contested Democratic primary in California, with several candidates, including Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee, already in the race. Concerns about Feinstein's cognitive state have been growing in recent years, with widespread reports of her forgetting people she has met and being confused during Senate hearings. California's jungle primary means that all candidates, regardless of party, are on the same ballot, and the top two vote-getters make it to the final election. With numerous Democratic heavy hitters running, the primary will be interesting as Schiff, Porter, and Lee are all relatively well-known. Ultimately, Feinstein's retirement should be seen as a good thing, and it will be interesting to see which direction California voters will want their representation to go in.
