Canadian Grandma here. My granddaughter has been recruited to play hockey at a US university. Thankfully, it is in the northeast, and two years from now. How can a naive Canadian student prep? Definitely she has no "live-shooter" training. Anything else that will shock her?
I’m in New York, and for a Canadian student coming to a Northeast university the adjustments are pretty simple. She’ll need to learn how campus healthcare works, get used to showing her student ID for buildings and residence halls, and understand basic campus safety rules. The bigger differences are actually cultural, like more school spirit and louder sports culture. Day to day life feels very normal, and Canadian students settle in easily.
This is a request: Will you file a FOIA request for anything gathered by the Trump Administration from the Tate brothers' personal devices, while they visited Florida and their devices were in the governments control.
Some colleagues and I have been developing a community-based communication strategy that we believe could help broaden access to trustworthy local information and improve civic engagement. We've piloted and refined it in a few places, and it’s shown real potential.
We’d appreciate the chance to share it with you—off the record—for your perspective and to see if you think it’s something worth amplifying. We’re being intentional about who we approach, as it’s important the idea not get co-opted or distorted before it has a chance to grow.
If you’re open to a short, private conversation, we’d be grateful. Please let me know. Thank you!
Thank you for opening up your podcast or newsletter to take questions.
If I am not mistaken, you stated recently that the 2028 campaign has already started. Then you discussed the various contenders. I have a two-part question.
First, all things being equal (i.e., that the candidate is of good moral character, competent, compassionate, and cross-culturally sensitive), what are the chances that a left-center, politically unaffiliated individual, who has never held or campaigned for an elected office, could be nominated as a presidential candidate and possibly even be elected president?
Second, if such a person were to develop a large political base, should they register as a Democrat?
Thanks again. I realize this issue might not meet your criteria for a response.
What do you think of Zohran Mamdani and Donald Trump's meeting from a few days ago. I supported Zohran since the minute I heard about him and his policies, but the strangly chummy meeting the other day was a big shock to me. Do you think it's possible for Mamdani to have a productive relationship with Trump without being brainwashed? I'm sure he can, but I would love your perspective.
Because the United States is made up of fifty very different economic and cultural systems, much of the national agenda, whether written by Democrats or Republicans, inevitably ends up helping some states while putting pressure on others. Policies that fit dense high skill metro economies often clash with the needs of low cost rural economies, and the reverse is equally true. This leaves Congress and the presidency looking disconnected because they are expected to speak and legislate as if the entire country shares one reality. Do you think this structural mismatch is a major driver of recurring political conflict and voter swings, and is there any practical way to govern a country this diverse without reinforcing that disconnect?
Do you think the voters will ever stop swinging back and forth between the two parties every election, given the glaring difference between the two parties, and when it’s been demonstrated that at least one party (Dem) has historically made progress culturally, politically, economically, and environmentally, and has the potential to do even more?
Please comment on the broad significance of MTG's resignation from her office as a Representative: was this personal, strategic, or both?

Hi David,

PS: It was partially inspired by your book!

But before I post the questions, let me lay the ground work by stating that, according to a Pew Research study, as of 2024 more than 80% of Americans don't think their elected officials care about them (https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/04/30/more-than-80-of-americans-believe-elected-officials-dont-care-what-people-like-them-think).

What do you say when folks say "this is the greatest country in the world" ?
