Trump Doubles Down on Speaking at NRA After Shooting
Donald Trump doubled down on attending this weekend’s NRA convention despite the recent mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York. The right thing to do would have been to cancel the appearance out of respect for the victims, but of course, Trump and most of the speakers at the conference don’t care enough to do that. Trump said in a statement on his Truth Social platform, “America needs real solutions and real leadership in this moment, not politicians and partisanship. That’s why I will keep my longtime commitment to speak in Texas at the NRA Convention and deliver an important address to America. In the meantime, we all continue to pray for the victims, their families, and for our entire nation—we are all in this together!” Thoughts and prayers are all politicians like Trump can offer as proposed solutions for these mass casualty events that are essentially unique to the United States.
Republican Representative Threatens Biden with Gun Violence
A Florida state representative named Randy Fine threatened President Biden in a tweet saying that he could be targeted if his administration tries to ban guns. Fine tweeted, “I have news for the embarrassment that claims to be our President — try to take our guns and you’ll learn why the Second Amendment was written in the first place.” This type of language should not be tolerated from anyone, let alone a sitting state representative in the United States. Fine was confronted by the media about his statement, and he doubled down saying the president’s remarks on gun control were “incendiary” and “hugely inappropriate.” This guy should have to have a chat with the Secret Service over his remarks and then he should be voted out of office to show that this type of rhetoric should have no place in American politics.
From yesterday’s show:
NRA Disgusting Response to Texas Shooting
The National Rifles Association never fails to provide a detached and despicable statement following a significant mass shooting in the United States and they’ve done it yet again following the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. After offering sympathy to the victims and their families the NRA said in a statement, “although an investigation is underway and facts are still emerging, we recognize this was the act of a lone, deranged criminal. As we gather in Houston, we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure.” The NRA clearly wants to make the conversation about how this was a “lone, deranged criminal” and how we need to make “schools secure” as a way to fend off any possible gun control legislation and admission that firearms could be part of the problem. The right thing to do would be to accept that they are part of the problem and to cancel their convention in Houston, Texas this weekend, but of course, they have no intention of doing either of those things.
From yesterday’s show:
List of SPECIFIC Gun Safety Regulations to Try
Every time there’s a high causality mass shooting in the United States, we go back to the same conversations about what can be done, if anything, to put an end to them. Right wingers insist that nothing should be done about guns and instead the focus should be on things like mental health (even though they’re unwilling to fund mental health treatment). There are indeed a number of measures relating to guns that would protect Second Amendment rights while at the same time making these tragedies happen less often. Some ideas include: ending the gun show loophole, universal background checks, and instituting a mandatory waiting period. Age restrictions may have to be put in place that make it so a person under 25 can’t have a high capacity weapon and needs a community support letter to get any firearm at all. Gun insurance should be mandatory, as should periodic mental health exams, and and there should be an extensive licensing process. Finally, some firearms deemed too dangerous simply should be banned with a gun buyback program being put in place to serve as an offramp for the people who want to take it. These changes would do a lot to curb gun violence in this country and it’s time we at least tried some of them.
