Very very scary, all of it….but so happy that the Dems flipped a seat and in Iowa no less. Hopefully this will lead to flipping the House in 2026.

I live in small town Iowa where the only remaining Trump flag hangs limply on a flagpole just below the equally limp Confederate flag.

Thank god some of the media has woken up and are slowly but surely bringing this mad man's antics to the masses. Trouble is that the MAGA contingency are just as bonkers as he is so they'll put up a strong show of resistance .

Well he is distributing and spreading a lot of trash through America, so that's unfortunate especially for the National guard folks. Perhaps, he could assign the deal to the 1500 MAGA insurrectionists that he pardoned-- called is public service. But seriously here is why he does everything he does:

"Gavin Newsom has stepped into the debate, questioning Trump’s cognitive health on social media. Trump responded by mocking Newsom’s hands."

That was a weak response. Gavin needs to be willing to get low and dirty for this to work, such as pointing to Trump's obvious failing health with his hands, mocking his doctor's reports declaring him 6'3" and 225 pounds, and then noting how it is Trump declaring the results of the 'cognitive test' he took, pointing out how they are all lies and so we must judge him on what we see. Using pictures of him without makeup or girdle on. Drilling in on what it takes to make him look like he does for the 'show' and how even so it is falling apart, unable to hide what he is becoming. Break the image. Dare Fox to report what Newsom is saying, and how Trump is flailing.

I know Democrats are supposed to be all enlightened, civilized, restrained, but remember, when you have a crazed, violent, terrible person breaking every law, do you call a social worker or a cop? I want the cop to subdue and arrest and get that crazed lunatic somewhere safe, THEN let the social worker deal with them.

Trump gets his power from the voters who are busy watching the 'reality TV show' called politics, and to take down the 'bad guy' who is so very interesting, getting the highest ratings for viewers (even though they know he is not nice) and so to make it clear what his nature is, he needs to be engaged. Trump has stifled most of the media, and certainly the reporters who have access to him, so it takes somebody 'big' enough that Trump can't ignore, and with attacks on Trump he can't ignore, to provoke him into responding and then point out the nature and feebleness of the responses from Trump.

If Trump can be shifted from "Powerful angry scary man who is 'doing what has to be done'" to Feeble, weak, dying OLD man with his brain failing him more each day who is simply demented, crazed, greedy and running scared of going to jail, then eventually his support will shrink, like a 'scary' carved pumpkin left outside too long.

Trump can best be beaten by showing who and what he is, and that takes a loud voice people can hear, and provoking Trump to respond to it. I dearly hope Gavin keeps pushing this line and expands on it. No need to hold back as Trump has already effectively declared war on California and has turned FEMA into a joke.

I am honestly glad for the sake of the National guard troops in DC being repurposed from 'policing' / intimidation to cleaning and 'beautification'. While it is not their normal purpose and could have been handled in ways to reduce the local poverty by employing locals, at least they have a positive thing to do, to be doing a 'service' that helps rather than hurts, which is I am certain why they had joined in the first place. I am confident many of them, prior to this repurposing, were upset with their assigned task, knowing very well it was Trump flexing his intimidation and seeking to declare martial law, using them as pawns.

I have no Idea how this change came to be, if it was Trump looking at the optics or a General deciding their troops did not need to be standing around looking scary to fulfill the requirements in the orders of deployment. But I will take the win.

Well said. In the 1950s our roadsides were overrun with litter and cigarette butts. That miraculously got cleaned up. However, it has now been replaced by far worse rundown communities and abandoned industrial sites. Here in WA state every community has abandoned cars, RVs and boats. Blighted communities foster crime and hopelessness. They discourage investment and prosperity. Local governments turn a blind eye to it and wonder why crime does not get better.

I would task both the Army Corps of Engineers and National Guard to form community cleanup crews to demolish and remove abandoned homes, cars and trash.

So I applaud using the Nation Guard to cleanup communities starting in Washington DC. That city should be a model of what America should look like for the rest of the world to see that there is some hope for Main Street and not just Wall Street.

What a ridiculous use of our national guard!!! Cleanup could be done in any number of more logical ways/ like minimum wage for people that are other jobless- you think it’s ok to pay for NG, and their housing and food allowance etc? Pretty EXPENSIVE clean-up crews

The country is so f.....ed up. I can't believe that that some people still support this administration. Please let your views be known by writing or calling your representatives and congressmen. I am not sure it will make a difference, but , at least, express your voice. I could just cry. I am 80 years old and have never lost faith in my country until probably the first Trump presidency. I could not believe that educated people could support this joke of a man and the current now his second presidency with totally inept people running important departments. God help us. We are in real trouble. As all of us would probably agree, there has always been waste in the government, but DOGE was not the way to handle it. Praying that God and our voices will eventually make positive changes.

"threatens to withhold funding from states over truck driver English proficiency rules." Wondering how this will impact the Truck Drivers from Mexico, which is part of the treaty we have with Mexico which Trump (re) negotiated in his first term in office.

Interesting to note that the United States does not have a 'national language'.

"Trump signs an executive order against flag burning." when one of the proper ways to dispose of a flag is:

"to burn it respectfully at home by placing the folded flag in a large fire until completely consumed"

Trump is all about the 'show' and does not want the 'show' that was common when he was younger of protestors burning the flag, which created quite the conflict and even some arrests until the Supreme Court declared it was a form of free speech and thus protected by the first amendment.

Trump commonly abuses the 1st amendment with his lies, accusations without evidence, slander, insults and outright attacks and threats on people such as Judges and prosecutors and those related to them. But he dearly wishes to severely limit anyone else's freedom to oppose him.

Again, this is all about the 'show' and this executive order is like all the others, only as powerful as people let him get away with it.

I thought his order was solely about burning the flag during a protest?🤷‍♀️

I honestly don't know, but again SCOTUS has, in a prior incarnation of the court, declared that to be free speech of a politcal nature which this court has maintained has priority over all other freedom of speech issues, such as defamation and harmful lies, at least when Trump says stuff. I do have to wonder though, have there been a lot of flag burining at protests lately? Or is this simply another Trump invented crisis of his own making?

Flipping a 'red' seat in a state legislature by 21 points is a sign of the times. Gives me hope that the 'extra' gerrymandering in Texas and perhaps other states, even if they survive the legal tests, will still result in a broader sweep of Democrats coming into office up and down the ballot.

There are people who want the destruction Trump is bringing, who want the hate and don't mind the pain as long as it hurts 'Those' people more... But most people simply bought into the fear and the lies and the reality TV show, But there is a saying I like: "Reality does not care what you believe, it just is" and eventually reality has a way of making itself felt.

Politicians these days are prone to saying "Perception is reality". No. It is reality that people have perception, and that people respond to their perception, but their perception is not reality. In fact it takes a lot of effort by anyone to truly perceive reality. But here is another saying I like: "Pain is your friend, it teaches you things". When you feel pain, pay attention to it ans learn from it. Use the pain to wake up and look around. I suspect in that red seat in Iowa, people felt pain and woke up.

I have faith in Trump and his 'Republican' party, that they will continue to make things worse, because that is all they know how to do. I suspected that when Trump won, with Republican House, Senate and SCOTUS, it would be terrible, but if we could survive it, it would be the best thing for the country because finally the people would wake up and demand POSITIVE change and realize Republicans could not be trusted. Democrats need to start planning ALL the BOLD changes they want to make. No half measures, no more getting lost in the weeds in the details when talking about them and trying too hard to be 'bipartisan' when Republicans can not be trusted to argue in good faith. People KNOW the system was busted before Trump came in and made it much worse. So scrap it all, build it fresh and make it better for everyone. Even the super rich will be better off in a vibrant, healthy country, though they will miss their power and some of their wealth, but how many mansions, planes and yachts do you need anyway?

Unfortunately it is a true observation that many people will trade freedom for the assurance of security. The name change from "defense" to "war" is revealing, no? Defense is defensive, to maintain safety and freedom, but war is offensive. That tells us what Trump's focus is. Of course his selections for cabinet and his elimination of the top echelons of military, intelligence, and emergency preparedness make clear that our national security is not a priority.
