Today is Wednesday, August 13, 2025, and this is your news and preview of today's show.

Donald Trump has declared a “crime emergency” in Washington, D.C., placing the city’s police under federal control and deploying the National Guard. Crime data shows murders fell 32% last year, armed carjackings dropped 53%, and violent crime is down another 26% this year. Analysts warn the move brings advanced surveillance tools such as drones, facial recognition, and cell-tower spoofers that could be used to monitor protests.

A new report estimates the Trump family earned about $3.4 billion during his two terms in office, with $2.37 dollars from cryptocurrency ventures launched before his second term. Other revenue included hundreds of millions from financial deals, hospitality, media, and donor-funded expenses. Trump properties saw increased business from political events, and he did not place assets in a blind trust, allowing him to benefit while serving as president.

At a press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said monthly jobs reports may be suspended while data is reviewed and confirmed Trump will require homeless individuals to enter shelters or face imprisonment. She declined to discuss the president’s health and said Trump might award the Medal of Freedom to a staffer nicknamed “Big Balls” after a recent assault.

California Governor Gavin Newsom issued online warnings to Trump over Republican-led redistricting maps, saying California would respond with legal and political measures. He said crime in the state has declined and accused Trump of targeting Democratic-led cities without cause, suggesting new maps could help Democrats retake the House.

Asked about addressing root causes of crime in D.C., U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said she was “not concerned” with why people commit crimes and dismissed questions about DOJ funding cuts to gun violence prevention programs.

Finally, Trump lashed out on Truth Social over coverage of his planned meeting with Vladimir Putin, attacking former National Security Advisor John Bolton and saying that even if he “got Moscow and Leningrad free,” the media would still call it a bad deal.
