Republicans to SCOTUS Nominee: How Religious Are You? Are Babies Racist?
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is going through her Senate confirmation process this week to become a justice on the Supreme Court, and Republicans are doing their best to stand in her way by asking stupid questions. South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham asked Judge Jackson, “what faith are you” and “how important is your faith to you?” Texas Senator Ted Cruz put up a giant chart and asked the SCOTUS nominee whether she agreed with the premise of some book that supposedly argues babies are racist. Finally, Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn asked Judge Jackson, “can you provide a definition for the word ‘woman.’” Ketanji responded that she’s not a biologist and that it’s not her role as a judge to be giving basic dictionary definitions. This was basically how the whole day of questions from Republican senators went, with the notable exception being Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse who actually had some thoughtful and substantive questions for the Supreme Court nominee.
Trump Talks "N-Word" in Bizarre Fox Interview
Donald Trump spoke to Fox Business’s Stuart Varney this week and managed to embarrass himself in a number of different ways. Speaking about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Vladimir Putin, Trump said, “I listen to him constantly using the n-word. That’s the n-word. And he’s constantly using it. The nuclear word.” It’s unclear whether Trump was trying to be clever here or if he didn’t realize what people would automatically think when he said “n-word.” Varney certainly didn’t understand it as he looked completely perplexed by the faux pas. The Fox host followed up by asking Trump to speak about military policy. He said, “does this discussion about whether we should send jets, MiG jets, to help the Ukrainian air force, would you send in that kind of help?” Rather than answer the question, Trump went on to ramble about something else. For someone who wants to stay relevant in the political sphere so he can run again in 2024, Trump still has no interest in brushing up on actual matters of policy.
From over the weekend:
Right Wing Media Tearing Itself Apart Over Russia-Ukraine
Right wing media doesn’t quite know how to criticize Joe Biden for his response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The hosts on Fox News, Newsmax, and elsewhere know that they want to attack Biden over the war, but they can’t seem to all get on the same page. One viewpoint is that Biden isn’t doing enough to support Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy because he’s not giving him all the weapons and materiel that he’s asking for. Sean Hannity said on his program last week, “give Zelenskyy what he’s asking for, the weapons that they need so they can battle back against Russia.” Others in right wing media are taking the opposite approach, that Biden needs to stay out of this conflict entirely. Laura Ingraham argued, “the US is simply in no good position to engage in another protracted military struggle.” Somehow even though the opposite commentary is being provided by these two examples, they both find a way to twist it into an attack on Joe Biden.
From over the weekend:
Americans Fall for Disinformation, Just Like Russians
The Russian invasion of Ukraine provides an opportunity to reflect on propaganda and disinformation. It’s very common for Americans to think those in dictatorial regimes are gullible or naïve for believing everything told to them by their leaders and state-run media. The truth, however, is that many Americans fall for this same type of stuff. For example, the vast majority of Donald Trump supporters believe he was the true winner of the 2020 election and that the race was rigged by Joe Biden and the Democrats. Another example is from the American invasion of Iraq. A study done by PIPA found that those who watched Fox News had a high likelihood of believing Saddam Hussein was responsible for the 9/11 attacks, that weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, and that the world approved of the American intervention. A significant portion of a population can be duped by the right propaganda and that’s true for places like the United States as it is for places like Russia and North Korea.
