Republican Debate Goes Horribly Wrong
A recent Republican primary debate in Wyoming made Liz Cheney look like the only sane person on the stage, even though her politics are far right and neoconservative. Cheney is one of the few Republican lawmakers who supported Trump’s second impeachment and now is serving as the vice chair of the January 6th committee, so it’s opened the door for Trumpian Republicans to try to take her seat. The rest of the candidates argued Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election were justified and that January 6th was no big deal. They also propagated conspiracy theories about the COVID vaccines, leaving only Cheney to say “everybody ought to get vaccinated and we need to do everything we can to protect ourselves from future viruses.” Even on the issue of the Russia-Ukraine war, some of the candidates on the stage were taking the anti-Ukraine position, whereas Cheney voiced her support for the country being attacked. Cheney is by no means a reasonable person, yet it’s better she holds that seat in Congress than any of these other Republicans running against her.
Trump Freaks Out Over Possible Charges, Slams Cheney as "Despicable"
Donald Trump went on Truth Social over the long weekend to complain about the possibility that he gets charged as a result of the congressional January 6th hearings. Trump seems to not understand that it’s not the committee itself that would be prosecuting him, but rather Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Biden Justice Department, if they ever decide to. Trump posted, “Warmongering and despicable human being Liz Cheney, who is hated by the great people of Wyoming (down 35!), keeps saying, over and over again, that HER Fake Unselect Committee may recommend CRIMINAL CHARGES against a President of the United States who got more votes than any sitting President in history. Even the Dems didn’t know what she was talking about! Why doesn’t she press charges instead against those that cheated on the Election, or those that didn’t properly protect the Capitol?” The former president must be deeply concerned about the possibility that he faces consequences for his role in the insurrection, even though many of us have given up hope that he actually will.

Joe Rogan Likes Dangerous Ron DeSantis for President
Podcaster Joe Rogan gave a half-hearted endorsement of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, which makes little sense given how he previously supported Bernie Sanders and claims to be a mostly liberal guy. Rogan said, “I think Ron DeSantis would work as a good president. I think, I mean, what he’s done for Florida has been admirable.” Joe went on to applaud Florida’s governor for “standing up for freedoms.” This in particular doesn’t make sense, as DeSantis is against legalizing recreational cannabis and abortion rights. Florida also has some serious problems on its hands that DeSantis isn’t doing anything to fix. The state is only 33rd in economic opportunity despite having so many tourist attractions and 20% of Floridians don’t have health insurance. Rogan may want to look elsewhere if he wants a successful president who will defend personal freedom in 2024.

Campaigning on Guns and Abortion Might Actually Work in 2022
Conventional wisdom surrounding what issues to run on in elections says that Democrats should not try to make abortion rights and gun control voting issues. Instead, it’s better to focus on the kitchen table issues like gas prices, inflation, and the economy overall. However, this midterm season may be different given the events of the moment and current polling on these topics. Looking at abortion, only 41% of Americans agree with the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade whereas 59% disapprove, according to a CBS News / YouGov poll. When it comes to gun control, Pew Research data show that the vast majority of people support background checks, oppose concealed carry without a permit, support red flag laws, and support bans on high capacity magazines and assault weapons. With these two issues being at the forefront (at least for now) they appear to be the right issues for Democrats to run on going into the 2022 midterms.
