Joe Biden's Student Loan Forgiveness Could Be BLOCKED
It’s important not to prematurely celebrate Joe Biden’s announcement of student debt relief of up to $20,000 per borrower, since there’s some chance that the move will end up getting blocked by the courts. The most likely way would be for a lawsuit to be brought by a citizen, although it’s not clear what type of plaintiff would have the standing to bring such a case. Maybe it would be someone who already paid off their student loans or someone who doesn’t qualify for relief since they make more than the $125,000 annual salary limit. Attorneys General in red states across the country, including Missouri, Texas, and Arizona, are already trying to figure out how to block the plan. The issue could ultimately be decided on by the heavily conservative Supreme Court which could likely come up with a reason to put a stop to it. This is predictably causing anxiety among people who stand to benefit from the relief and were just beginning to feel the weight of debt getting lifted off their shoulders.
Steve Bannon Makes a Scene While Surrendering to Police
Steve Bannon turned himself in to police yesterday over a second indictment having to do with his “We Build The Wall” scam. Bannon made quite a scene while he entered the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. Steve said, “This is irony. On the very day the mayor of this city has a delegation down on the border, they are persecuting people here.” Folks in the crowd were yelling back at Bannon with one woman sounding like she had a megaphone and repeating: “stop hurting America you greasy grifter!” Bannon was pardoned by then-President Trump on the federal charges pertaining to this matter but that did not prevent state charges from being filed against him. The accusation is that the group pocketed the money instead of dedicating it to building the wall or ultimately returning it to donors. Bannon has pleaded not guilty to the charges which include money laundering, scheming to defraud, and conspiracy.
From yesterday’s show:
SHOCK POLL: Biden Leading Trump By 6
A poll by Yahoo News and YouGov was released on Wednesday and it showed that Joe Biden is leading Donald Trump in a head-to-head matchup of possible 2024 presidential contenders. The poll found that 48% would support Biden and only 42% would back Donald Trump. The same poll conducted last month said that Biden only had a three-point lead over Trump, meaning his margin has doubled. Biden’s approval rating has improved in recent weeks due to his signing of the Inflation Reduction Act and his decision to forgive some student loan debt. In contrast, Trump’s approval has dwindled from the fallout of the FBI raid of his Mar-a-Lago home. Other polling outlets have the hypothetical Biden-Trump matchup as closer, with Emerson putting it at a statistical tie. But there’s no doubt that the numbers have been trending in Biden’s direction and hopefully, he can keep that momentum going for the remainder of his first term.
From yesterday’s show:
Trump's "Special Master" is Incredibly Shady
A “special master” has been appointed by Judge Aileen Cannon to oversee the documents that were seized last month from Donald Trump’s Florida home and the legal reasoning for the decision is on extraordinarily shaky ground. The argument is that Trump is in a unique position as a former president and so a review is necessary to make sure politics is not at play in the investigation. This “special master” will be able to review the documents in question and delay the probe for as long as possible, perhaps past the point when Trump will inevitably announce his 2024 run. As Duke University Law Professor Samuel Buell wrote, “To any lawyer with serious federal criminal court experience who is being honest, this ruling is laughably bad, and the written justification is even flimsier. Donald Trump is getting something no one else ever gets in federal court, he’s getting it for no good reason, and it will not in the slightest reduce the ongoing howls that he is being persecuted, when he is being privileged.” Buell is absolutely right on this and he is just one of a number of legal experts who believe the judge’s “special master” appointment is a disgrace to her position as a federal judge.
