This propaganda cycle eminates mostly if not exclusively from right wing figures specifically Trump. Largely because he is in power and has an agenda ...to continue to rule and stay out of prison. Really only evil people use this and he and the entire Trumpublican system have mastered the 'art'.This is why we are in this nightmare and will continue to be if nothing is done about it.

Where it emanates is to be expected but who perpetuates it and for that to be successful, it takes a much wider range of people. Media have much to answer to. So do ordinary people of all perspectives.

Santa Claus (morphed from St. Nicholas who never gave gifts to good children), the Easter Bunny (no info on its inception), Antifa (we'll know the name of the founder soon, because ICE Barbie has captured his wife and she'll squeal). I think it was Vance who gave the game away during the campaign when he said that if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes truth. And who believes these lies? People who think Africa is a country etc. I don't see a way to educate the people so that they question what they hear.

Sharon, we need a one liner comeback when we hear this crap. The attention span of the ‘unthininking’ is short.

Information, including misinformation, spreads in the same way that viruses do. I refer you to

"THE RULES OF CONTAGION Why Things Spread - and Why They Stop", Adam Kucharski, © Adam Kucharski, 2020, 2021. First published by Profile Books Ltd., London, 2020. Later revised to include experience gathered during the COVID pandemic and published in association with Wellcome Collection, London, 2021.

Whether the misinformation that immigrants are eating their neighbors' dogs spreads or dies, depends on whether people who hear or read it succeed in "infecting" others, i.e., convincing them to spread it. It's the spreading that counts, not how insistent an infected person is, i.e., how long and fervently he tries to convince others. In other words, like COVID, it's the development of the reproduction number R that determines whether (mis)information spreads or dies out. And yes, not only publishing what one has heard or read counts as being infected and thus attempting to infect others, but also just repeating it.

The most effective "vaccine" against catching such viruses is probably to develop a routine for consulting reliable sources, by which I don't mean sources that simply repeat things that Trump and his sycophants say and take not responsibility for the veracity thereof, but those that make the effort to discredit lies and correct misunderstandings.

Thank you, David, for covering this crucial topic. I remember learning about the types of propaganda techniques in fifth or sixth grade. That was a long time ago- during the Cold War. We would have short articles to read and circle and identify the different examples of propaganda. Do kids learn that anymore? The one type of propaganda that stuck in my mind was the emotionally weighted word. Now, with multimedia information, the weighted word is compounded with emotionally triggering music and videos. Kids (and adults) haven't learned to recognize overt and subconscious manipulation. In fact, the reason I respect and support your work is your calm fact based delivery of verifiable information.

Now that we see it clearly how can we interrupt the cycle?

I find myself disbelieving most media now but what can i say to others about why? It has to be as short as the attention spans are. Slogans would be good.
