Currently the fith largest economy in the world, which includes lots of high tech, production and food production, plus some good schools. Just saying, if the US were to 'fall apart' there would be more than one region that would make a successful secession, and their common color code is BLUE.

Can they feed themselves? They have enough space, especially if they grow vertically with underground wintering and decentralize production.
Granted most of what the red states produce is through penury for fossil fuels, so the winds will blow that into the East.
At least trading with Canada will maintain the 'bread basket'(pancakes with real maple syrup), even if they don't like Alberta.
