How Lying Became Acceptable in American Politics
The emergence of political figures like Donald Trump and George Santos goes to show that in many ways lying has become acceptable in American politics. One reason for this is the proliferation of news sources and the spread of misinformation on social media, which makes it difficult for the average person to determine what is true and what is not. Political polarization and divisiveness also encourage politicians to lie in order to win elections or advance their agendas, as many have the belief that the ends can justify the means. Many voters also seem willing to overlook lies if they further their beliefs. They excuse the falsehoods because they believe the people they support can push the agenda they want to see implemented. While it’s going to be impossible to completely eliminate lying from American politics, it would be nice to see politicians actually get held accountable for a change when they get caught.
Trump Interview So Delusional, Friendly Host Can't Save Him
Donald Trump recently gave an interview on Revolver News in which he claimed that Twitter's only chance of survival is if he returns to the platform and abandons his own social media platform, Truth Social. The host, Darren Beattie, sucked up to Trump and suggested that he is the only president in a long time to not bring the country into any new wars. This has become a popular right-wing talking point that doesn’t represent Trump’s war-hawkish foreign policy and his inability to end the war in Afghanistan. Trump also made other baseless claims, including that Russia and Ukraine would not be at war right now if he was still in office. Beattie did his best to flatter Trump, and the former president sounded as desperate and detached from reality as ever.
From yesterday’s show:
George Santos Lies About Being Sworn In
Representative-elect George Santos is accused of lying yet again, this time about being sworn in as a member of Congress. Santos’s press team put out a statement that read in part, “US Representative George Santos was sworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives by the Speaker of the House on January 3rd, 2023.” The lie is obvious on its face since there isn’t currently a Speaker of the House and the biggest news story over the past few days has been about how Republicans have failed to put their differences aside and rally around Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Perhaps this was just a mistake made by a member of Santos’s staff. However, it’s hard to give Santos the benefit of the doubt when he’s lied about everything from his educational and professional background to his personal identity. It remains to be seen whether Santos will ever be sworn in given the controversy he’s dealing with, but it certainly hasn’t happened yet.
From yesterday’s show:
Lack of House Speaker is a National Security Risk
The inability of the Republicans in the House of Representatives to elect a Speaker is not only making their party look bad, it also could cause instability in the government and present national security risks. The Speaker plays a critical role in managing and organizing the legislative process, and without one, the House may struggle to conduct business and pass legislation. The longer the impasse continues, the more the American people's confidence in the government is likely to decline and the higher the chances are that something could happen that would require the involvement of the House, which may be chaotically scrambling to respond. The existence of such a risk may put pressure on Democrats to allow a pathway for McCarthy to get enough votes to win the position. But it’s not the responsibility of Dems to come to the rescue on this just because the Republican Party can’t get its act together.
