Totally normal: (Christian) Republican says trans people "mutants"
The Florida legislature has passed an extreme anti-trans bathroom bill and a ban on gender-affirming care. These bills would penalize providers and prohibit public funds for gender-affirming care for trans youth and adults. During a hearing on the bill several weeks ago, Florida Republican Representative Webster Barnaby referred to trans people as mutants, demons, and imps, reminiscent of sci-fi characters from the X-Men series. He also rebuked Satan as part of his political philosophy and expressed his righteous indignation toward the supposed dysphoria and dysfunction of trans people. This language used by an elected official is vile and disgusting, and it demonstrates the insanity taking place in Florida. The bills ultimately passed, exemplifying the ideology of some Floridians' representatives. The DeSantis agenda tied with a violent interpretation of Christianity is a concerning trend to many Floridians. It is a stark reminder of the discrimination that trans people face and the uphill battle for their rights and recognition.
ANOTHER Trump arrest almost certain this summer
Failed former President Donald Trump is likely to be indicted again this summer, this time over charges from the state of Georgia. The Fulton County District Attorney, Fani Willis, has requested additional security between July 11th and September 1st for when she announces charging decisions related to Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election result in the state. Legal experts and former prosecutors have said the request makes it almost certain that Trump will be indicted. The case in Georgia is likely going to be seen as much more serious than the one out of New York related to the Stormy Daniels hush money payment. It is unclear how the charges will affect Trump's political aspirations. While it may make him an unappealing candidate in the general election, many of his supporters may be energized by his arrest, feeling he is being targeted for political reasons rather than for the alleged crimes he has committed. The case highlights the importance of allowing the justice system to operate without political interference and for evidence to be the only basis for any charges.

Florida Republicans pass DISGUSTING "pronoun" bill
Florida Republicans have passed a bill banning diversity programs in colleges and preventing teachers and students from being required to use pronouns that don't correspond to someone's sex. The bill expands the “Don't Say Gay” law, prohibiting classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation up to the eighth grade and strengthening the system to challenge school books. Critics argue the bill is discriminatory to the transgender community and impractical to enforce since teachers cannot know a student's gender by looking at them or using their birth certificates. The ban on diversity programs has also raised concerns about limiting inclusivity and understanding among different cultures and communities. Additionally, there are worries that the Republicans will go after LGBT teachers next. This is not only morally wrong but it’s also likely a strategic mistake for the right, as they do not have the voters on their side when it comes to these issues.
From yesterday’s show:
Judge throws out Trump's lawsuit, orders him to pay legal fees
A judge has dismissed former President Donald Trump's lawsuit against The New York Times and ordered him to pay all legal fees. Trump had sued the paper and his niece, Mary Trump, alleging a plot to obtain his tax records and publish them in a Pulitzer-winning report. The court threw out Trump's claims against the newspaper and its reporters, and his claims against his niece have yet to be ruled upon. This is certainly not the first time Trump has faced legal troubles. He paid $25 million for his involvement in the Trump University scam and had to pay back $2 million for misusing charity funds. Trump also had to pay a $10 million fine for laundering money through his Trump Taj Mahal casino. The likely upcoming tactic from Trump is to refuse to pay the legal fees, resulting in further lawsuits and costs. Trump is also currently on a trip to Ireland and Scotland despite going through a civil trial for rape and defamation that is taking place in New York City.
