Even Fox News admits Trump rolled back train regulations
The train derailment in Ohio has sparked a sub-story about ending regulations that were put in place during the Obama administration but were rolled back by the Trump administration. Although it is unclear whether the regulations are related to the incident in East Palestine, Ohio, the topic has garnered attention from both sides of the political spectrum. Right-wing media sees it as an opportunity to criticize President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, while most on the left are concerned about the potential dangers of deregulation. Fox News even mentioned the issue of the regulatory changes and pointed out that Trump rolled back train safety rules. The regulations in question were designed to require railroads to update their braking systems, specifically for trains that carry hazardous materials. This could end up being yet another example of right-wing deregulation leading to a tragic result.
Fox News & Nikki Haley struggle to dance around Trump cognitive test
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley went on Fox & Friends for an interview to talk about Donald Trump and her idea to have politicians over 75 take cognitive tests. Co-host Brian Kilmeade asked Haley, “how would Donald Trump do on the competency test at 76 years old?” The former UN Ambassador and former South Carolina Governor responded. “you know, I think he did great the last time he did it. I have no reason to think he wouldn't do well this time. But I do think we need it. And it's across the board.” Haley continues to take the approach of refusing to criticize Trump and she’ll likely keep that strategy going for as long as she can during the campaign. What remains to be seen is whether Republicans this time around will go for a candidate who is unwilling to engage in the blood sport that has become right-wing politics.
From yesterday’s show:
Trump slams Nikki Haley in confused, bizarre campaign email
After Nikki Haley's announcement that she will be running for the Republican nomination for president in 2024, the Trump campaign sent out a confusing and bizarre email attacking her. Trump compared Haley to Hillary Clinton in an attempt to paint her as left-wing, quoting a 2012 interview wherein Nikki said she was inspired by Hillary to run for office. He simultaneously criticized Haley for being too conservative in the email, quoting an excerpt from the Washington Post that claims she, “praised [Paul] Ryan’s Medicare proposal. . . and said lawmakers should examine Medicare and Social Security spending to address federal debt.” It's not clear that Republicans care about policy enough to hold this against Nikki Haley, but at a certain point, she'll have to come up with a better response to Trump’s attacks than the sidestepping she’s been doing.
From yesterday’s show:
Ron DeSantis now copying how Trump says "China"
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis clearly appears to be copying Donald Trump’s pronunciation of the word “China.” DeSantis has copied many of Trump’s mannerisms and stylistic choices over the years, from his hand gestures to his oversized suits. It seems that this creates an opening for Trump to criticize DeSantis for being a copycat, but that’s a strategy he hasn’t yet pulled out very much. The 2024 Republican primary is shaping up to be a wild one. It’s already off to a bizarre start with Trump being the only one willing to directly attack other candidates. Now with Nikki Haley officially in the race, it will be interesting to see who will be next to declare and whether that person will be Ron DeSantis.
