C-SPAN Caller Furious At "Colored" People on TV
A person from Tennessee called into the show “Washington Journal” on C-SPAN and complained about minorities sharing their opinions on television. The host of the program was an Hispanic man, with the guests being a black woman and an Asian man. The caller said, “I want to know if we could cut out some of these liberal things that are going on in America, just like on the TV now. We have two minorities, and I’m not against you minorities.” At this point, the host, Pedro Echevarria, cut off the caller saying “that shouldn’t be a factor.” Echevarria allowed the caller to go on for a little bit more, but once the caller used the term “colored people” the host quickly brought an end to the call. One of the guests, Ebony McMorris, said on Twitter about this, “I was trying to hold it in, but I promise you I felt all my ancestors rush through my body.” This incident goes to show that for as much as has been accomplished regarding racial issues in this country, there’s still a long way to go.
Michael Cohen: Indict Trump Now or I'm Out
Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, is fed up with prosecutors refusing to indict his former boss. Cohen is the star witness in a case out of Manhattan into Trump’s possible financial crimes, and he says if there is no indictment from the grand jury they have over the next nine days, he’ll no longer be willing to cooperate with them. The current grand jury’s term will expire on April 30th, at which point they will need to get an extension, or end it and a new grand jury will be brought in. Cohen said about this, “I spent countless hours, over 15 sessions—including three while incarcerated. I provided thousands of documents, which coupled with my testimony, would have been a valid basis for an indictment and charge. The fact that they have not done so despite all of this . . . I’m not interested in any further investment of my time.” This news doesn’t provide any insight as to if Trump will be charged in this case, but it does suggest that if it’s going to happen at all, it’s going to happen soon.
From yesterday’s show:
Elon Musk is Buying Twitter
Earlier this week, Twitter announced that it has accepted a deal from Elon Musk to buy the company and take it private. Musk is purchasing the social media giant outright for $44 billion ($54.20 per share) after taking a big stake in the company earlier this month. Many right wingers are rejoicing over this news because they believe it means “free speech” will return to the platform and figures who are currently banned from the site like Donald Trump and Alex Jones will be allowed to come back on. Many on the left are worried about what this means for corporate consolidation with the richest person on the planet having significant footholds in cars, space travel, internet access, and now social media. Musk says this is more about facilitating a free and open virtual town square than it is a money making opportunity, but given his track record at Tesla and his other business ventures, it may end up being both.
From yesterday’s show:
WOW: Trump Chief-of-Staff's Riot Text Messages Leaked
The New York Times has obtained 2,300 text messages from Donald Trump’s fourth and final Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows. Many of the messages reveal coordination between Meadows and Trump allies to craft a narrative excusing Trump for his role in the January 6th Capitol riots. Others show the reactions from top Republican officials as the the attack was underway. Mick Mulvaney sent the text, “Mark: he needs to stop this, now. Can I do anything to help?” Rep. William Timmons texted, “the president needs to stop this ASAP” and Reince Priebus sent, “TELL THEM TO GO HOME !!!” The messages also show Fox News propagandist Sean Hannity taking his marching orders from Meadows on Election Day. Meadows told Hannity to make sure his viewers and listeners get out the vote in North Carolina. Many of these texts confirm what we already knew about Trump administration officials — that they worked hand in hand with right-wing media, that they knew the January 6th riots would look bad for them, and that even those closest to Trump were completely unable to control him.
