Over the weekend, Donald Trump escalated his use of presidential authority by deploying National Guard troops into Oregon and Illinois despite objections from state governors and mayors. This move likely violates the Posse Comitatus Act, which restricts federal military involvement in domestic law enforcement, as well as constitutional limits on presidential authority. Courts have already intervened, including a ruling from a Trump-appointed judge blocking the federalization of Oregon’s Guard.
Recent ICE operations have sparked chaos in U.S. cities, with videos from Chicago and Los Angeles showing officers using unmarked vehicles and masks. These actions have generated public resistance and raised concerns about the use of law enforcement tactics to create disorder, justify militarization, and erode civil liberties.
Donald Trump gave a confused speech to Navy servicemembers after being missing for days and arriving nearly an hour late. He bizarrely claimed he had “warned” about Osama bin Laden a year before 9/11, and demanded credit for predicting the attack. He then lied about a lawsuit with the Associated Press, falsely claiming victory, and went on a political rant calling Democrats “a little gnat” who want to give money to undocumented immigrants.
Karoline Leavitt faced difficulty explaining the White House’s position on the government shutdown. She noted that emergency room care for undocumented immigrants is funded by taxpayers but struggled to contextualize that ERs are legally required to treat all patients regardless of immigration status. Leavitt also described federal employee layoffs during the shutdown as both a necessary consequence and a joking “opportunity,” despite evidence that the administration has embraced such actions.
In cultural news, Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny hosted Saturday Night Live and is slated to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show. His use of Spanish in the monologue sparked backlash among some right-wing critics, despite Puerto Ricans being U.S. citizens, highlighting tensions over Latino representation in American culture.
Finally, Rep. Maxwell Frost, Democrat from Florida and the first Gen Z member of Congress, joins us to discuss the government shutdown, Trump’s immigration policy, tariffs, and much more…
On today’s bonus show:
The Supreme Court takes up cases testing Trump’s presidential power. The Saudi comedy festival sparks controversy with many American comics participating. A petition to cut congressional pay during shutdowns gains traction, and much more…
