The party that used to be about reducing big government and returning policy and decision making to the states is doing an about face in order to support all things big business / corporate benefit.

Agree and no where is this more apparent that the move to have federal government control elections. It is okay that the trivial rights of women to have control over their bodies was throw to the states. But something far more important like voting needs to be controlled at the federal level.

That's a good one 😂

It’s misspelled intentionally; an attempt at humour. Failed attempt, I guess.

I had not heard of the Save our Bacon Act until the political ads showed up in Iowa. They show how foreign countrys are investing in the market and how politicians are being paid to keep this act. Thank you for giving me more information to understand what's the behind the scene.

Customers can refuse to buy, and companies can refuse to sell. Freedom is a real pain sometimes, but it is better than the alternative. A state can act as agent for its people. It can refuse to allow purchases of products it declares do not meet it's standards.

By the way, California has been doing this with regards to cars for many decades now, and every time it does we hear the same squeals from Republicans. And every time, after a few years, the manufacturers improve their products and EVERYONE across the nation benefits.

If a company does not want to change it's practices, they can find other states to sell to. If a company thinks it can make a profit by adapting to the new requirements and thereby gain access to a huge market, that is called CAPITALISM.

Lower standards will also inhibit international trade with countries like EU , Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Canada among many others

Definitely. Australians know the USA has low standards on food processing. Sometimes im surprised they have standards. I can't eat much food in USA as even the bread is so sugary. I live on Italian food over there.

Never heard of Save Our Bacon! We stopped eating bacon in 1985. My husband's brother, who ate a Rich Executive's diet, had two heartaches at 43 years old within six months! The first was minor the second caused heart damage. He had gone back to the "Rich" diet.

States have an obligation under the U.S. Constitution, 14th Amendment to protect human health and safety. This regime is interfering.

"Some conservatives view it as a states’ rights issue and question whether Washington should be preempting laws that were enacted through state democratic processes."

I am one of those conservatives.

Big Ag is arguably more of a cancer on workers and society than Big Tobacco or Big Pharma.

Democratic socialism (check various definitions) are where decisions are made for the benefit of WE THE PEOPLE. Hard to argue against that IMHO.

This is news to me too. I know in Texas they gutted the Hemp act.

In Europe, we have high food safety standards. They are the reason a lot of American food cannot be sold (such as chlorine treated chicken meat). There is a general European legislation, but individual countries can still refuse the import of products which comply to the EU standard, if they can prove there is a national health issue.

So, in USA, no state should be allowed to sell products which are "worse" than the federal standard. But they can opt for better. Also on animal treatment...

I'd like to know how much has been spent "persuading" politicians to vote for or against this, before changing anything.

LynseyFS's avatar

Thank you for this report, David - I'm one of the citizens who had never heard of the “Save Our Bacon Act.”

Intentionally misspelled with the intent of humour. Perhaps a failed attempt.

Since you have 'elected' a Congress, for the good of ALL the people, and since the present administration has gutted the Regulatory agencies, do you now want Swine fever to DECIMATE hogs in only state just because that state doesn't beleive in vaccination for animals because big pharma would lose money??? If Congress should pass a law then it MUST BE NATIONWIDE with penalties for disobedience. Until you return to a correct Law and Order situation - pre Trump - trhen your Congress will put you all at risk by doing nothing. There have to be times when the Congress has a duty and responsibility, (remember those words, pre Trump) and obligation to override the States in certain circumstances.

Thank you for addressing the Save Our Bacon issue. As a Californian it burns me up to think our voices and our votes are being quashed by this fascist administration. We fought hard to get a modicum of humane treatment in California farms! There is just so much bad news from this administration every day. Thank goodness for the many successful lawsuits fighting back in court.
