I seem to be in the minority. I still have trust in the Democratic party and I have confidence that we can build a more equitable society.

Robert Goldbach's avatar

I agree Susan. There really is no alternative at this point, is there?

Cheska1960's avatar

I agree. I was a Republican a long time ago. The Democratic Party is the only place I want to be .. for many reasons.

We the people need to know who we vote for not party, sex, or monetary but for truth,Integrity, compassion and not old hateful greedy grifters.

We the people? Maybe you should be saying “We the Sheeple”.

Americans need to wake up to the undeniable fact that America is a country of sheep 🐑 ruled by wolves 🐺 and owned by pigs 🐷 🐖🐽🐗.

The reason there are so many lawless corporate criminals in the United States is because it’s allowed.

The reason grifters thrive in America is because they know they can because they are also above the law and they’re not going to be punished. I also know that Americans are too weak and into brainwashed to present them with a little DIY justice such as filing nuisance lawsuits against the corporate criminals, and showing up at their mansions and corporate headquarters to tell them what they really think of them and what would happen to them from America ever became a nation of laws and justice.

Maybe things could improve a little bit if we have a Democrat majority but it would be a lot better if we had equal justice under the law and government for and by the people. We don’t have that.

Are you American?

I think I sound a lot like an American one of the few educated ones who is a brainwashed by corporate news and lying politicians. I guess I’m rare among Americans because I think for myself and I don’t repeat shit that I hear especially when I think it’s shit.

I do imagine things like when Jesus cleared the temple with a whip and drove out the money changers. I wish you’d come back and do it too the bankers and the corporations and then move onto Congress, the courts And the White House.

Russia succeeded in creating a party, MAGA, that believes only in winning elections and it's normal for MAGA to call it rigged shamelessly and with zero evidence when they lose. Had Biden's AG succeeded in prosecuting Trump and his thugs for the J6 terrorist attacks, the public opinion would have changed, however, Democrats too sometimes are not serious enough in such procedures, alas! Our next Democratic President should be aware of this and without prosecuting Trump's crimes and his thugs, this country will sink like the Titanic, something we all hate to see.

Hound's avatar

Russia could never have done it if the United States was a country of laws. Mark Zuckerberg was complicit in spreading Russian propaganda along with other corporate crooks that had social media platforms such as Google and Twitter. If you told somebody to fuck off on Twitter they would ban you but if somebody lied and lied and lied and lied and lied and lied and lied, they’d keep you around because lies create more clicks and views by people trying to debunk the line. Most corporate people are by the very definition of traitor a traitor.

America's real crisis is Ignorance. Over 300 million Americans are in a stupor of extreme imbecility. You have people who cannot pick out the USA on a world map, cannot think critically and have a hard time describing anything about the US outside of their very own zip code - and I'm being generous here. As far as the rest of the world goes, forget it. These people do not know the Pacific from the Atlantic ocean nor the capital of their own state. Most cannot read, cannot write and certainly are not great orators. These USA citizens are dangerous for the future of the country. Tour groups now offer tours of Kabul and Afghanistan. It's safer to go there than to the USA. You need to educate your people on world events or be out maneuvered by all countries in all facets of politics and science and tech etc. Just look at the dunce face Trump had while listening to President Xi speak about the Thucydides' Trap. Lost. Completely. Stunned. Sinking. Quickly...and bringing all of the USA with him. What a SHAME.

The erosion of trust of American citizens in our government is bad. But so is international trust in what the American government says, by foreign governments.

What country (other than Putin’sRussia) can risk trusting, believing anything the American government says while Trump and his cronies are in office? None. That is a tragedy of truly historic import.

Hound's avatar

It looks like David is reading my sub stack. The crisis of trust happened on before Trump and it’s not just about America’s not trusting their corrupt government. People better wake up and learn how to define with American government really is. The American government a bunch of corporate controlled puppets with a morals lower than balls of a deadly virus.

Americans are not only being screwed by the entity they think is the government. Americans are getting screwed from every direction. Americans are pretty fucking stupid and maybe they don’t deserve freedom or liberty or equal justice under the law. Maybe they’re too stupid to have a democracy.

When you lemmings think that somehow this corrupt corporate owned government is going to magically reform itself, it tells me that every one of you hates a pile of shit sandwiches every day.

While you caught the essence and the risk, it is always more complex than that, because people are. Some try hard to 'make it work'. Many 'believe in the system'. There really are differences between the two sides:

Democrats fail because they (Maybe most of them, certainly a lot of them) are basically decent people working in a broken system where they can not help things unless they are in office and usually (for those who are not born to be media stars) that requires some big money, so they get it from those who are not the worst (because rich people vary as well).

These Democrats fail because they are not focused as much on the power, the money, so they do not think in terms of USING the power in bold ways. They are born politicians (not necessarily a swear word) who seek compromise and follow procedure to get the job done. Problem is they assume Republicans are just like them. Maybe once they were two teams with honest debates about the function of government, but that Republican party killed itself. It was always dishonest at it's core, because government is supposed to serve the people. We had at one time lots of laws that kept things fair and reasoned, then courts stuffed with judges Republicans put there, and administrations of Republicans, dismantled those protections and Democrats thought they were playing to the 'moderates' by not opposing Republicans as Republicans incrementally cheated their way to maximize their power.

It is time and past time for Democrats to learn how to wield all the power they have (which right now is low, but will grow) so that when they do get it, they go big and bold and get stuff done.

Republicans will screech, but they also lie and cheat, so f*** them.

America is certainly suffering a trust deficit now because of Trump. Even allies have decided America is an unreliable ally and are backing away and making arrangements between themselves which exclude America.

Americans also seem to have decided the Republican Party cannot be trusted because it has now has just one job - to help Trump become a total dictator.

Investors have decided America is unreliable, so the US Treasury has to offer 1% higher interest rates to attract buyers of its bonds.

Travellers are also bypassing America because they refuse to hand over five years of their social media history and risk being detained.

In the long run Europe and Asia will be better off not relying on America, since Trump favours dictators like Putin and Xi over democratic leaders.

America is committing self-harm, as Aussie PM Albanese said.

The world will be better off without America as an unreliable ally.

To be clear, the same forces that created Fox news and a network of Conservative talk radios across rural America. That got 'conservative' activist justices on SCOTUS. that pushed the idea of 'Trickle Down Economics' and ultra Rich people as 'Job Creators', and how it was 'only fair' to reduce the taxes for the wealthy... pushed the idea of 'Small Government' which appealed to rural Americans because their local governments did not need to be large or complex. They pushed the idea of regulations were inherently BAD (with never a mention of why they were there) and generated the idea of most helpful programs as filled with fraud and enabling lazy scam artists to live off of their hard earned wages...

The 'changes' made whenever Republicans could was to increase the paperwork, create higher more complex hurdles for people in need to overcome before getting any help. They created inefficiencies in government, then accused the government of being wasteful and inefficient (unlike free enterprise). Whenever they were not in power they were the rocks in the gears, breaking the system as much as they could. In 2025 they went all in and just killed off entire programs, stripped others of funding, hobbled others.

Republicans have historically reduced taxes on the wealthy, spent like crazy on wars and then declared there was no money left for the poor.

Let us be clear, Democrats are not perfect. They are people and some are beholden to corporate supporters, but for the most part their supporters are ok with a functioning system. Republican Wealthy Supporters are not wanting ANY government interference in their ability to amass all the wealth.

Democrats have been the quiet managers, the ones who keep the system working and the lights on. They supported the status quo, even as Republicans have shifted the status quo ever further into the dark corners of the sewers. Too many are still stuck in that institutionalist mind trap, assuming Republicans are working 'in good faith' and buying their excuses mentioned quietly in the 'cloak room'.

Dave, your lack of understanding the crisis we are in, that has grown for decades. The collapse of credibility in our courts (SCOTUS), our National government, our Media... and the appetite there is for massive change. Wealth spiraling to the top. The old calculations are dead. Trump went bold, as the people demanded, but of course Trump made things WORSE, but that only forced even more people to demand BOLD! Who won the primary in Maine? Why are elections skewing the way they are? People KNOW it is time for major change, because major change is coming for them. Watch any AI ads lately making older people feel obsolete? And then we have college kids wondering if there will be any jobs for them? Democrats poll poorly because they are not being BOLD enough, and the ones that do poll well are the boldest of the lot, and not just from the 'extreme fringe'.

The new definition of 'Moderate' is 'Useless'. No more need for 'deal makers' with Republicans, they broke any trust, just as Trump broke any trust internationally. When you keep refusing to deal in 'good faith', you lose credibility, just like SCOTUS did and all the rest of the Republicans that are still pushing forward despite the public screaming at them to stop.

Totally agree with your assessments! You are smart.

What do I think??? Putin has succeeded!!

So if you don’t think “ socialism” would fly politically in America you are historically wrong. FDR was a democratic socialist who was so incredibly popular he was elected president 4 times! We are at that inflection point again. What solution are you advocating? We’ve had decades of weak Incrementalism abd aggresjve corporate ruch people capitalism on steroids. Neither has worked.

Basically. you and substack columnists agree. But, othenr media leaves important bits out. Headlines today noted Trump ended his tax exposure case--omitting the federal 10b settlement he gaven himself.
