Today is Thursday, August 28, 2025, and this is your news and preview of today's show.

Economic concerns are growing across the country. A New Republic analysis warns that Trump’s trade policies, combined with rising inflation and corporate layoffs, are fueling conditions that could push the U.S. toward a new recession. Shoppers nationwide are seeing higher food bills as grocery chains pass the cost of new tariffs onto consumers. Trump has said foreign governments would pay those tariffs, but economists note they are effectively taxes on U.S. importers, who then raise prices.

In Washington, a debate over gun violence broke through on Fox News. Former Republican congressman Trey Gowdy said the country must begin discussing keeping firearms out of the hands of young men after repeated school shootings. He contrasted that with Fox host Sean Hannity, who argued schools should rely on metal detectors and tighter perimeter control.

In Florida, a federal judge has ordered the closure of a $245 million migrant detention center built in the Everglades. Dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” the site was championed by Trump and Governor Ron DeSantis. The court found the facility unlawful, leaving taxpayers responsible for millions in construction and shutdown costs.

California Governor Gavin Newsom escalated his feud with Trump by posting an exchange with Elon Musk’s Grok AI, linking Trump’s repeated false statements to symptoms of dementia. Trump responded by mocking Newsom, while critics seized on the irony that he has long accused President Biden of similar issues.

In Washington, D.C., Trump claimed the city’s restaurants are booming under his leadership. But industry data shows reservations and new openings have dropped significantly following his security crackdowns, with dozens of restaurants closing this year.

Meanwhile, the White House is facing turmoil inside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC Director Susan Monarez was fired after just four weeks on the job. She says she was removed for refusing to endorse unscientific directives pushed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Four top officials have since resigned in protest, accusing the administration of spreading misinformation and undermining public health.

On the Bonus Show today:

Putin escalates strikes against Ukraine.

Prosecutors are unable to get an indictment against a man who threw a sandwich at a federal agent.

And 25 countries suspend postal service to the US over tariffs.
