Russ, I mostly agree with you, specifically on the ongoing, apparently insoluble problem of the mere existence of Iran’s medieval, bloodlust-filled Muslim theocracy. I will go out on a limb and say that, in some ways, I think it's about damned time.
The thing is, there were many, many reasons previous administrations didn't take this route. Of course, the Sainted Gipper was in bed with them. The release of our hostages was deliberately arranged to further humiliate Jimmy Carter (Reagan had a real mean streak, that SOB). At the time of the crisis, I took to referring to the Iranians as Iratians; they were always so MAD.
I think Jimmy did the best he could. If the Disaster in the Desert had rather been a resounding success, Jimmy’d gone down as a warrior, which in WW2 he was, while Reagan paraded around in his officer’s pinks selling war bonds.
