I am a retired senior and I am on propane for heat and PIPP for my electric. I live in Ohio in a rural area. Both of these programs are operated through the same office as SNAP in my area. I am afraid that HEAP and PIPP will be affected as well, keeping people from getting their heating fuel for winter. Yes, Democrats have been 'out of touch' as well as poor at presenting their views to the voters. A large part of that 'out of touch' has been their persistent death grip on old policies that most people take as a given, as much as they assume clean air is a given (not being aware it used to be nasty and very unhealthy). Democrats only look progressive compared to Republicans who (by their descriptions) want to go back about fifty to a hundred years.
Meanwhile the world has changed and people's experience with the economy has gotten much worse. Democrats create workable governmental programs and Republicans either dismantle them or make them painfully hard to access. And the Democrats let the dysfunction stand, apparently thinking it is not worth fighting over.
If you want to find what a real 'centrist position' is, don't grab the Republican version and the democrat and split the difference, look at what people really want. Too often Democrats have compromised in advance, then the republican 'moderates' 'negotiate' until the proposal is almost tolerable to them and then either back out completely or accept their win of having taken the major advantages out of the bill.
For instance, a Centrist Gun bill would make 'mass murder' weapons illegal or require a special permit, insurance, tracking and other regulations, and would require a permit process for use and registration of guns for ownership equivalent to what we use for cars and driving. While every state has some differences, all states have them with VIN numbers, registration, insurance and driver licenses, because cars and guns are roughly equally as dangerous and require skill in order to make them tolerably safe. Anyone who pushes for absolute freedom and no tracking is reading the constitution to mean people have the right to arm with weapons of war to overthrow their government.
A Centrist immigration bill would allow for those people who have lived here 'long enough' (at most twenty years I would say) to have a possible path to citizenship if they have been contributing members of society. Think of it as a very long 'probation'. We should allow for legal standing (no fear of 'immigration' being called) of sufficient (immigrant) workers in our workforce, so that employers can not use their fear of deportation to lower their wages and abuse them in other ways, thereby reducing opportunities for living wages for American Citizens. Let us face it, some jobs are just plain hard and brutal and nobody who is not desperate is willing to do them, but the Republican strategy has been to make citizens desperate enough to do the needed work... at cheap wages and the immigrants fearful enough to accept lousy wages and working conditions. Lots of other details can be improved, such as were in the bipartisan bill in 2024 that Trump had killed, because he wanted to sell fear and hate.
Stop thinking 'centrist' means mediocre, insufficient, half measures. People want REAL solutions to their REAL problems and some things are better done by government than businesses.
