Today is Monday, September 15, 2025, and this is your news and preview of today's show.
Political leaders and media figures across the country continue to respond to the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Some right-wing commentators have claimed that the left is “cheering” the attack, citing isolated internet posts or an Elon Musk retweet of an obscure account. The broader pattern tells a different story: when violence or illness strikes figures on the left—such as Paul Pelosi, Melissa Hortman, or President Biden—prominent Republicans, including senators, governors, and even Donald Trump, have mocked, laughed, or turned these events into memes. This pattern underscores a stark contrast in how political violence and suffering are treated across the aisle.
Authorities say the shooter's motive remains unclear. Public reporting indicates Robinson had recently expressed political views that diverged from his family’s conservative background and that investigators are examining his online activity and personal contacts as they work to determine why the shooting occurred.
President Trump has publicly blamed “the radical left” for political violence and called for investigations into online activity and foreign actors celebrating the killing. Other elected officials and public figures have warned against turning the attack into a pretext for sweeping restrictions on speech and online platforms.
Fox News host Brian Kilmeade suggested that homeless people could be killed via involuntary lethal injection, sparking widespread criticism and an apology from the network. The comments highlight a long-standing pattern in which extreme rhetoric around poverty and “worthiness” circulates without consequence, reflecting a worldview where cruelty is normalized and dehumanization precedes violence.
In other national news, the House Oversight Committee has released a large batch of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation — more than 33,000 pages of Justice Department materials and additional records from Epstein’s estate — while lawmakers and advocates continue to press for the release of unredacted files and related financial records. Committee officials say more material remains under review and that some pages are redacted to protect victim identities.
