Today is Friday, August 29, 2025, and this is your news and preview of today's show.
At a town hall in Alabama, Congressman Barry Moore faced repeated questions from constituents about Donald Trump’s tariffs. When Moore declined to answer who pays those tariffs, the crowd began chanting, “Who pays the tariffs?” In Missouri, Congressman Mark Alford was confronted by a soybean farmer over the same issue, saying farmers were losing their farms due to the loss of markets created by Trump’s trade policies.
In Minnesota, following a mass shooting, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suggested that psychiatric drugs such as SSRIs and transgender medical transitions may contribute to violence. He announced that studies are being launched into the role of these treatments. Critics have pointed out that his comments did not address the issue of firearms.
Donald Trump, posting on Truth Social, claimed the Republican Party is positioned for a major victory in the upcoming midterms. He said the party has raised more money than Democrats, gained millions of new supporters, and may even hold a national convention ahead of the election. Trump described the GOP as “winning at a record pace” and said the results of the party’s efforts are “incredible.”
Meanwhile, discussion about state secession has resurfaced. Legal experts note that the U.S. Constitution does not allow for states to leave the union, a position reinforced by the Civil War and the 1869 Supreme Court decision in Texas v. White. Analysts point out that while formal secession is impossible, some states could reduce their reliance on federal funding in what has been called a “soft secession.” Data show that many blue states send more in federal taxes than they receive in spending, while many red states receive significantly more federal funding than they contribute.
In Washington, questions about the president’s health have resurfaced after the White House highlighted former Trump physician Ronny Jackson’s claim that Trump is the “healthiest president this nation has ever seen.” Jackson, who now serves in Congress, previously lost his Navy rank after misconduct allegations and has faced scrutiny for overprescribing medication. The administration has acknowledged that Trump has chronic venous insufficiency, and recent images have shown visible bruising and swelling.
Finally, speculation continues about Vice President J.D. Vance’s role should Trump’s health decline. At 79, Trump’s physical condition has drawn public attention, and some observers note that Vance has increased his national visibility while maintaining some independence from the president. While no formal plans have been announced, discussion continues over how the GOP might navigate a transition if Trump were unable to serve.
