Transcript:
Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election weren’t isolated acts — they were the culmination of a years-long strategy to undermine democracy. From pressuring election officials to backing fake electors and inciting the January 6 insurrection, Trump tested every possible avenue to stay in power despite losing. This wasn't just election denial, it was a direct attack on the peaceful transfer of power.
But Trump didn’t invent this playbook. His actions built on decades of Republican efforts to suppress votes and manipulate electoral outcomes, especially through voter ID laws and gerrymandering. These tactics became more brazen over time, laying the groundwork for Trump’s escalation. The erosion of voting rights was never incidental, it was strategic.
The Republican Party’s shift toward authoritarian tactics has roots in its embrace of white grievance politics. From the Southern Strategy to the rise of right-wing media, the GOP steadily cultivated a base increasingly hostile to multicultural democracy. Trump successfully tapped into and unified these forces, creating a movement more about cultural dominance than traditional conservatism.
Since then, the GOP’s focus has shifted from winning debates to rigging the system. Instead of appealing to a broader electorate, the party has prioritized voter suppression, election subversion laws, and control over vote counting. This is no longer about conservative policies — it’s about entrenching minority rule.
