Today is Monday, August 4, 2025, and this is your news and preview of today's show.

President Donald Trump is facing a growing economic crisis as new data shows the U.S. economy is slowing sharply. The July jobs report revealed only 73,000 new jobs were added last month, far below expectations. Additionally, previous months were revised downward by a total of 258,000 jobs lost. A recent poll finds 60% of Americans blame President Trump for the high cost of living, with many struggling to cover basic expenses. In response, Trump has doubled down on tariffs, increasing some import taxes to 50%, a move economists warn could worsen inflation.

Trump fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Erika McEntarfer, shortly after the release of the disappointing jobs report. Trump accused her of presenting “rigged” data and called her a political appointee. The move has drawn criticism for targeting the messenger rather than addressing the economic challenges. The fallout from Trump’s actions is reaching into his own party. Prominent Republican senators have expressed concern over the firing of the BLS head, saying it undermines confidence in official economic data.

In other news, Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted sex trafficker and associate of Jeffrey Epstein, has been transferred from a high-security federal prison in Florida to a minimum-security camp in Texas. This move came days after a two-day private meeting between Maxwell and Todd Blanche, a top official in the Justice Department and former Trump personal lawyer. Normally, sex offenders are not eligible for such transfers. Maxwell’s downgrade has raised questions about the reasons behind the decision, especially amid ongoing scrutiny of Trump’s connection to the Epstein case.

In entertainment news, President Trump was met with boos at the sold-out WWE SummerSlam event at MetLife Stadium. A video montage featuring Trump triggered a loud negative reaction from the crowd of 70,000. Trump, once a WWE Hall of Famer and part of the wrestling world, did not appear in person, but the crowd’s reaction was clear and overwhelming.

Additionally, Trump drew attention for remarks focused on his press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s appearance during a televised interview, commenting on her lips in an inappropriate way. Leavitt, 27, is the youngest press secretary in U.S. history.
