Today is Wednesday, September 24, 2025, and this is your news and preview of today’s show.
President Donald Trump posted a lengthy message on his Truth Social account criticizing ABC’s decision to bring Jimmy Kimmel back to late-night television, writing, “I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back,” before threatening legal action against the network and accusing ABC of favoring Democrats.
Kimmel returned to the air, opening his monologue by defending free speech and criticizing government pressure on broadcasters and comedians. He said a government threat to silence a comedian is “anti-American,” adding that while his show itself isn’t important, the right to have such a show is. He also mocked Trump with several jokes, including references to Trump’s appearance and his fixation on political enemies.
At the United Nations General Assembly, President Trump praised his own poll numbers, claimed that “everyone says I should get the Nobel Peace Prize,” and told world leaders, “your countries are going to hell.” He also called Christianity the most persecuted religion in the world. His remarks were paired with extended, unscripted digressions, including a description of national borders as having an “amorphous shape.”
During the same U.N. visit, an escalator carrying the president and the first lady stopped briefly. Trump’s team suggested sabotage, and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called for an investigation. U.N. officials later said the stop was triggered accidentally by a member of Trump’s own delegation, and added that Trump’s staff was responsible for the teleprompter that malfunctioned during his speech.
California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a stark warning, saying he fears the United States may not hold a free and fair presidential election in 2028 unless urgent steps are taken to defend democratic institutions. He said Democrats have been weak in their messaging and stressed the need to fight “substantively, not just symbolically.”
