How very Presidential, he is destroying our country and Congress is letting it happen!

Richard - Yes. What's so very disturbing is that Congress is letting it happen! You know, they say you never really know a person's character until it is tested. I guess we know the character of the Republicans in Congress now! It's clear they never loved this country, its democracy, its Constitution, equality for all, freedom of speech, the press and all the other freedoms laid out in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights enough to stand up for them. It turns out they were ready and willing to sell us all down the river for money and power. And the rest of us, be damned. So disgusting.

And saying that about Nancy Pelosi means he’s talking about himself. Anyone with that much brain decay should be legally removed from office - especially before he totally destroys the nation.

Those in power, who stand by in the face of evil and let it pass are as guilty as the one who does the evil. Hitlers lieutenants at Nuremburg said they were just following orders. I highly suspect the Repub senators and reps are just following orders as well. There will be hell to play when the Dems come back into power, so Repugs you may want to clean up your act while you can.

My biggest fear is our two houses of congress main business will be investigating each other instead of solving our problems. That and spending money they do not have for pie in the sky issues instead of the here and now.

I love Warren Buffets take on govt. If they do not balance the budget they will be ineligible for re-election. All congress people need to be held to some measurable standard. One of which you get 2 terms and you are gone. No more homesteading in congress. Also age limits, no more dinosaurs. 65 and you live like the rest of us.

I believe Donald Trump sees himself to be small in direct proportion to his self-aggrandizement. So when he calls Nancy Pelosi a ““disgusting degenerate,” I believe he is projecting his own opinion of himself onto her. That’s his opinion of himself. That’s how it looks to me.

David - All of this is incredibly disturbing. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. I fear if we don't do something drastic - marching and protesting every day, doing sit-ins at the offices of our senators and representatives, now that they're home from D.C., holding boycotts, national strikes, etc. that the moment will be gone and we will be left living in a dictatorship, without rights, without our democracy. And how are those impeachment balloons going? Or invoking the 25th amendment? The next election is too far away, and Trump and his goons are plotting to disrupt/rig it anyway. Time to start a novena, for sure. :(

Of all the things I could say about this guy… Or I should say of all the things that I have said about this guy… I’m still not finished…!!! a good majority of the people who are homeless are veterans much to my chagrin. VA doesn’t take care of them. No one wants them around. My dad was a Marine for 30 years; both of my sons went into the Air Force, one retired. I have many uncles and cousins who were in the military, but whether these homeless people were in the military or not, I am beyond (meaning way over the top) any bad thoughts or feelings I ever had about that dude in the White House and his coward cronies. Something‘s gotta give!! I’m 73 years old, but if you’ll go out on the streets with me, I’ll certainly go out there with you! Sure, we’re taking our lives into our own hands, but is it worth it to save our country and its democracy???!!! Please say it is!! Now admittedly, I do think that some of these terrible things happening are God‘s judgment on this country because of rampant sin, and I include myself in that. I know the Bible says that unless we humble ourselves and pray and seek God‘s face and turn from our wicked ways, THEN he will hear from heaven and heal our land. Are you willing to do that? Most people aren’t. In any case, I’m praying so much for our country, it’s leaders to have more bold courage, and brains to know and do right from wrong in regards to our country’s people, and I pray the Lord sees from heaven and heals our land.

(Excuse any typos)

Patricia Grier's avatar

None of this is God's judgment on us, but it is the results of following a false Messiah and worshipping the golden calf. We were making our country better and safer for all people until Trump. But, many people love to hate. That's a sin too.

You’ll never convince me that some of this isn’t God‘s judgment… I forget how many millions of babies are slaughtered every year while still in the womb, and that’s only one of the many things I can think about that the Lord would be judging us over. I’m sure you’ll have plenty to say about that, but frankly, I won’t change my mind.

Expand full comment
Russ's avatar

With love comes responsibility.

Bringing millions of babies into the world, many of which will not be loved nor cared for is not God's will? We have 500,000 kids in foster care now and probably millions in destitute situations. Add homeless, growing crime and drugs and you want to add to that in the name of love? Many of those babies will be to single mothers who cannot care for them, just struggling to eat. Look at Africa, you want us to be that way?

Jeff H Silverman's avatar

The problem with saying that something is God's judgment is that we have no way of knowing who is being punished or why. Is God punishing us because we allow abortions? Or is God punishing us because we do not teach our children how to make love without conceiving a child? Is God punishing us because we allow greedy corporations to make obscene profits while people are starving in the street? Or is God punishing us because we eat pork and shellfish? We don't know.

At the end of the book of Job (starting in chapter 38), God explains to Job that there are a whole bunch of processes going on in the universe that we have no understanding of (which is true to this day, and we understand the Universe a lot better than whoever wrote Job did), and it is not for us to try to figure out God's will.

When God chooses to act, God usually does so in clear and unambiguous ways: destroying Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone, parting the Red Sea, stopping the sun in the sky, causing the earth to open up under insurgents, providing a fish to swallow somebody whole, causing a worm to kill a gourd..... And then you have the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther, which do not mention God at all.

So the idea that a given event, which is not supernatural, is not a compelling idea when there are competing ideas that explain the event.

Now, I happen to believe in an omniscient, omnipotent god. The more I study the universe, the more in awe I am of it. But if free will has any meaning, then God's approach to running the universe, which appears to me to be "hands off", is the right way to go. That means we humans cannot shrug and say, "This is God's will", but rather we must act.

Here’s what I believe, Jeff. Read your Bible. Read it from beginning to end. All the answers to our future, our past, our present, are all there in God’s Word. Then you might say, well, it’s in how we translate it. That’s why it’s important to read his word in context. Don’t just read one verse and try to explain it away. Read the entire chapter, or perhaps even the entire book. If you want real prophecy, you can go to the book of Daniel or Revelation and get answers you may not have realized or understood until you’ve prayed and asked the Lord to reveal the truth to you as you read his word. He wants you to know the truth! He wants us all to know the truth! We can sit here rationalizing things all day long as far as abortion goes… It’s murder of the unborn. Then there is the argument….well, it’s just a fetus. God‘s word says he knows you from the moment of your conception. Anyway, as I said, I don’t know all the answers, but I do understand the Lord‘s word. Even having gone to Bible university I still don’t have all the answers, but I do know that I don’t need to argue the word of God because it is truth to the utmost and there’s no point in arguing about it. I appreciate your thoughts and your ideas.
