Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken explained that past presidents like Barack Obama and Joe Biden avoided being drawn into war with Iran, despite pressure from Benjamin Netanyahu to act preemptively. They believed diplomacy and sanctions were more effective and wanted to avoid costly, prolonged conflicts. In contrast, Donald Trump escalated militarily, assuming Iran would back down quickly. Iran can wage war cheaply, using drones against expensive U.S. missiles, creating an asymmetric conflict.
The U.S. now faces a potentially prolonged involvement in Iran due to Trump’s miscalculations. Despite heavy U.S. strikes, Iran remains resilient, appointing a new Supreme Leader and continuing operations. Trump reportedly seems surprised, while advisors warn him to seek an exit as gas prices rise, jobs are lost, and markets wobble.
Trump’s messaging has been deeply confusing. He declared the war “mostly complete,” while Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced unprecedented strikes on the same day. Military experts say Trump’s claims don’t match reality.
At a Doral, Florida press conference, Trump claimed the war was over and just beginning, falsely suggested Iran used Tomahawk missiles on its own schools, and contradicted Hegseth multiple times. Despite Trump’s assertions of success, the Iranian regime remains intact, ongoing attacks continue, and threats like sleeper cells are unresolved.
Trump also made baffling claims about lasers replacing “patriots,” Iranians walking with missing limbs, and the war being ahead of schedule despite regime continuity. Hegseth’s over-the-top language and scripture references only added to the absurdity.
